All of the above, plus they are a simple, low-cost and maintenance pet. They don't demand a lot of attn. (reality is, they learn to permit us; they'd prefer to be left alone), just need a clean place to live, and small amount of food. They are caged, so they don't mess up our houses or shed all over, too.
And last, but certainly not least, they provide what any living creature does: a psychological feeling of not being alone. When I was a student and didn't have a lot of time or money, it was comforting just to hear Andy on her wheel and know that throughout all those study cram-sessions, I had someone up with me! She got so tame, I'd sometimes let her eat with me (she got her own plate, don't worry--but I would give her a tiny tiny schnibble of my chicken {large crumb size}--they love it--and tiny tiny bit of potatoes every few weeks).
Love to you and your little guy! (And if you don't have one, think about getting one--they're great!)
