I just hooked my old HD up to the computer in order to save some documents I really need to get onto the new hard drive. Unfortunately, on the old hard drive, I had set up Windows XP for myself (Owner) and 2 other people. Since I cannot boot from the old hard drive, or if there is a way to do it, I don't know what that is, I cannot enter my password to log on as Owner on the old Hard drive. There is no opportunity to log on to the Owner section of the old drive. I have already salvaged the other stuff, but I need the Owner's documents before I deep-six the drive.

How can I login if I can't even boot off the old drive?

Brilliant. I did what you suggested and I think it was starting to work, except after 2 or 3 minutes an error box appeared and said Windows can't continue...hardware is damaged...data is lost...etc.

Now the D: drive doesn't even appear in My Computer.

Is it time to give up?

So I am creating a shortcut to the D: drive in C:Shared Documents?
If not a shortcut, can you provide more instructions?

Where is the 'Ownership'?

Right click the drive and select security. Take ownership. Make sure you select the option to carry this to subfolders. This will fix the user id code, which is currently invalid on the new machine.
