The rank is Staff Sergeant, his pay grade is E6
In the US Army he wears three chevrons over a single arc. In the Army he is addressed as "Sergeant", in the USMC a Staff Sergeant is addressed as "Staff Sergeant".

A Staff Sergeant is a non-commissioned officer customarily assigned to lead a squad or a section of about 14 troops. A group of squads make up a platoon.

A skilled or senior Staff Sergeant could be assigned in the position of Platoon Sergeant (30-50 troops) or as a staff specialist such as operations NCO, Administrative NCO, Logistics NCO, etc... supervising an administrative section.

The Staff Sergeant is above a Sergeant and below a Sergeant First Class.

The ranks of Sergeant in the US Army are: Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Sergeant First Class, Master Sergeant/First Sergeant, and Sergeant Major/Command Sergeant Major. The highest Sergeant in the Army is the Sergeant Major of the Army.

Below the Sergeants are Corporal/Specialist, Private First Class, and Private (E1 and E2).

One rank up from a sergeant - if you are talking about the British Army. He wears the usual 3 chevrons of a sergeant - with a crown above them - though there may be some regimental variations to this.

A staff sergeant is an E6 pay grade (in the marine corps anyway and I think in the army too).. that is # 5 grades up from the lowest one. not bad at all for only 7 years depending on the job they have and whether they have had any combat duty or not.
