That depends what kind of Smith and Wesson 9mm. Anyways I would choose a Smith and Wesson because 9mm's are so much funner than .22s. It's nice to have some recoil and to feel the power of it. Plus, if ever anyone tried to break into your house then you'd have a better stopping round.

I would not go with any auto loader S&W. I have had very bad luck with reliabilty from them. Springfield Armory XD, Glock, Taurus, Ruger all much better. I owned a Sigma from S&W and traded it back to the same store I bought it 4 months later. M&P is a fancy Sigma.

Both are fun guns to shoot. However unless you reload the 22 rugar is much much cheaper to shoot.
