You shouldn't buy any gun for playing around with. If you mean for plinking, though, you should definately go for the .22lr, the ammo is far cheaper. Just a few bucks for a big block of ammunition. If you're looking to damage something, then the 9mm is a really good choice, as it's not too expensive either. A 250 round block of Remington UMC is about $50.

Play around with a squirt gun, not a firearm.
Rugers are a bit more utilitarian, but there is nothing wrong with them.
Smith and Wessons are a bit nicer, just don't try to disassemble them too much.
Field breakdown of a Ruger is very convenient, Smiths...not so convenient.
If you are not a very serious shooter, go with the Ruger. They are a bit more affordable, as well.
If you are the kind of person who really appreciates high quality, go with the Smith.
The .22 long rifle is far, far, more affordable to shoot.
"playing around with" is a worrisome statement.
If you don't have any firearm experience, take a safety class, it just might save your (or someone elses) life.
Pride has killed many a person, it's okay to be a beginner and seek instruction.

If its ur first handgun go with the 9mm. Because if you get the .22. Your most likely going to want to go bigger after a few weeks. Trust me I made that mistake.

For playing around with? NONE......... You can be just as dead with a .22 as you can with a 9mm. You shouldn't PLAY around with any weapon.
