Why, when some atheists ask questions respectfully and really want honest, serious answers, do some Christians answer with, "Repent, i will pray for you!!" ? It is quite possibly the most idiotic thing i've ever seen. Why waste your breath on someone who thinks you'll simply be whispering to yourself in a corner?

Also, why, when most of the questions asked my non-theists are so respectful, do some Christians berate them with insults and claim that they will go to hell? It doesn't make any sense! A respectful, honest question should be answered with RESPECT! I dare you to prove me right.

I tried posting this question before, but some wimp erased it. I guess it was too much for their little heart to take.

I don't mean to be rude to anybody with this question, except for those who deserve it. Hence, i tried not to make any generalizations on this post. If i did, i apologize.

I think it's because some Christians are very sensitive and think that to be a good Christian they have to convert other people to Christianity. Although, not an atheist myself, I do sympathize with you with being confronted by overzealous religious people. I say, let people believe what they want to believe and leave it at that.

--Why, when some atheists ask questions respectfully and really want honest, serious answers, do some Christians answer with, "Repent, i will pray for you!!" ?

Because that is what we do. We pray for others and hope the best for them.

--Why waste your breath on someone who thinks you'll simply be whispering to yourself in a corner?

Because we aren't whispering to ourselves, we are communicating with God.

--Also, why, when most of the questions asked my non-theists are so respectful, do some Christians berate them with insults and claim that they will go to hell?

I think this is because Christians truely want to be helpful. Sometimes in our help we do more harm then good. But, we do try. A quick comment here. I am not trying to be insulting mind you. I have seen numerous posts by Christians posted within this area. Once in a while there are words left out and mispellings. These are very quickly pointed out by non-theists.

I think I have answered your questions with the respect and honor they deserve. I do hope you have a blessed day. I promise I won't pray for you anymore today though.

Let the thumbs up begin!

Some Christians do try to give honest, serious answers...to honest, serious questions. Some atheists get irritated when a Christian says "I will pray for you"...others are grateful for the good wishes. I would say that the latter group are more mature, since at least they do recognize that the Christian's motives are for their happiness.
As for why some Christians berate respectful questions with insults and threats of hell, I honestly don't know. I would ask the same thing...when Christians ask honest questions, respectfully and courteously, why do some atheists insist on telling them how stupid they are? I agree, a respectful honest question should be answered with RESPECT!!
Not all atheists post hateful rants and call them "questions", but the ones that do give the rest of you a bad reputation. Some Christians are just sick and tired of all the nasty "witticisms" aimed at them, and they get to hitting the report button. None of us can remove a question, only Yahoo can do that...and if Yahoo did remove your question, evidently it was too much for THEIR little hearts to take. I have to assume that you cleaned up your act for this one...and it is still a rude question. I can see where you tried not to make generalizations...you were thoughtful enough to limit your comments only to "some Christians", which I do appreciate, since I do realize that some Christians are obnoxious hypocrites....
Just like some atheists, I'm afraid.
Apology accepted....

There are several possibilities. The most obvious is that generally speaking in religious discussion groups, most so-called atheists are there to stir up trouble. That makes most participants in these discussion boards very defensive by nature. Another option is that those who berate non-believers (my term--I don't believe anyone can be a true atheist) may not be "the best Christian", meaning that their relationship with God is...less than perfect. A different thought is that this is the internet, and everyone seems to wear their hearts on their sleeves. We're all human, and sometimes we mis-interpret another's intentions...on both sides. We can all learn to rein in the emotions while on the internet and take everything with a grain of salt.

Why do Christians answer respectful atheists' questions with, "Repent, I will pray for you!!"? I don't think they mean to be "rude"; I believe some are showing genuine concern and caring. Besides, they are simply parroting John the Baptist.....his whole purpose in life was to tell people to repent.

However, I agree with you....when a question is asked, it should be answered....no "dare" needed. It's common sense. However, I've noticed that sense isn't all that common when it comes to religious or political exchanges.

I feel there is no place for insult-trading.....it belittles both persuasions and shows marked lack of intelligence, in my opinion.

I could see why you would be turned off and mad. Christians need to operate out of genuine love and compassion not to fill their self righteous egos. If the greatest of these is love then what is the greatest sin? see 1 Corinthians 13. I am a christian and I have friends from all walks of life and I openly and lovingly share Christ if we were friends I would tell you about the Lord and tell you what he has done in my life but I would pray for you NOT shove it down your throat. As for the person who erased this, you were not profane or rude you just wanted an honest answer. I wish you all the best e4g

"Il pray for you....."
It IS embarrassing, isn't it?
To be fair, lot of atheists do slam Christians, and they are quite nasty about it. Sadly, I read the horribly inappropriate answers given by Christians that preclude any mature discussion or understanding of the topic at hand.
As a Christian, I'd like to propose a couple of rules of engagement:
1) Christians--cut the jargon. No sweeping pronouncements like "You're going to Hell." Not fair. Don't give lengthy scripture quotations. Non-Christians don't know what you mean, and chances are you don't either. Put it in your own words.
2) People of other faiths or none: No bashing or trash-talk. If you disagree, please say so and why--we all might learn something.
3) Everyone--I'll second the motion: answer with RESPECT!

I will answer any question that I can to the best of my ability. If I don't know the answer I will find it. All I ask is that you show me respect, and I will show you the same. I, as a Christian, get frustrated with other Christians when someone asks a question and just gets quoted a Bible verse or a lame comment like "you will burn in Hell blah blah". People need and want real answers, not stereotypical quotes that ANYONE can say.

So ask away my friend, I will do the best I can for you.

Jesus was born of a Virgin, if you don't believe that then you probably don't believe anything else the Bible says either, you can't. If you believe God spoke the world into existance but then say Jesus couldn't have been born by a virgin that doesn't make sense. Is that you? Do you pick out verses here and there and say this one is real and this one is not. The fact is we are Gods creation, he is the potter and we are the clay. God sent his son Jesus to die for our sins. Our sins seperate us from God. Jesus was all human yet all God. There comes atime when you are going to have to make a decision, the Bible says to look up and know that I am God. You either believe in a creator or not. Being a Christian puts you in the minority, you will not be the most popular, you will probably not be rich, but you will go to Heaven, and you will have a peace in your heart that few have. Its up to you. Here is a Prayer you can pray that will lead you to be Born again, just say Dear Jesus, I know and confess that I am sinner in need of salvation. I believe you died on a cross at calvery and arose from the grave to wash away my sins, I ask you right now to come into my heart and save me, I pray this Prayer believing in the name of Jesus Amen. If you prayed this prayer with a sincere heart you are now a child of God, rejoice that your name is written in the Lambs book of Life. Jesus will now send his Holy Spirit to come and live in your heart and guide you into all truth. If you have any questions just send me an email, God Bless YOU!!

I don't know what answers you have been looking at that show Christians being so rude or mean. All of the months I have been coming to this site I've only seen Christians speak about the love of God. Or tell how to get real help with their problems. On the other hand I have seen God haters bad mouth Christians 10 to 1.

Jesus: A great human being, a noble soul and a rebel against inequality and injustice. He is the most abused nonliving personality and church heads and false Evangelists make money exploiting His name and misinterpreting His teachings on love and brotherhood.

Mary: I do not want to answer this question because I am another victim of verbal abuses in the Yahoo Forum on my inconvenient questions.

Joseph: A tolerant husband, an innocent soul and deserved to be father of Jesus; but not believed so. I admire this soul.

Please do not expect serious and honest answers from persons living in religious cults.
