I think it was an effort to convert Arabs who didn't want to be converted. Also they may have been trying to gain control of Jerusalem or something. Not completely sure.

Theoretically, it was to retake the Holy Lands for Christianity. Europe had been OK with Muslims holding it but allowing pilgrims, but when a more extreme faction moved in, stopped the pilgrims and killed and mutilated some of them, it was decided to take the ladn back.

In practice, the Crusades had several purposes: it gave restless warriors something to do other than cause trouble at home; it held the promise of land and wealth, especially for younger sons who wouldn't inherit any; it offered a HUGE windfall for the merchants, since their trade routes went through the middle east.

It was not about conversion. Christians had been interacting and trading with Muslims for centuries. Both sides knew they were not going to sway the other.

The Crusades were religious battles fought between the Christian Empire of Europe and the Muslim empire of the Holy Land, they were started by the Pope because The Muslim Empire was getting dangerously close to Constantinople.

The Crusades were where people litterally gathered arms and attacked other countries with a "convert or die" idea.

Muslims had taken over a good portion of the map, including the holy land. Christians pushed them out.

The stated purpose was to drive Muslims from within the Roman Empire. The nefarious and true reason was to stain the true church's name and to wipe out the earliest Christian Jews - God's martyrs and saints.

That largest cult of all, Catholics, desired Islamics riches and land so they attacked and killed thousands of both friend and enemy. Oddly, they only partially won the first one and totally lost all the others.
