I was in the USN and in the eastern Med when it happened. All the sailors there wanted to deliver ordnance till we ran out (as did our Marine contingent) The powers that be nixed that, and now it is what it is.

I was only 3 at the time so I don't remember it, but my husband was part of the "Beirut Batallion" until 9 months ago. They were part of the 24th MEU that helped evacuate the Americans from Lebanon last summer, the first time 1/8 had set foot in Lebanon since 1983.

My Buddie was THERE... he spent 36 continuous hours bagging body parts of his Marine Comrades... then he went a little bonkers. From what he said, the Marines were often fired-upon but were forbidden to return fire... I think they did not even have live ammo while standing perimeter guard.
The Marines ended-up giving my buddie an OTH discharge. Guess PTSD still was not recognized then. Or perhaps one can not suffer the illness unless they are in a declared combat zone.

I remember it. I had retired from active duty about a year and a half earlier. The Captain of Marines who was the press spokesman for that Expeditionary Unit later retired after the barracks were bombed. He was an old acquaintance of mine. He became the managing editor of "Soldier of Fortune" magazine". Later, he went on to a career in Hollywood and served as the technical advisor the movie "Platoon" before landing a series of supporting roles in various movies. His name is Dale Dye.

One of the first Islamo facist attcks against America. What mkkes it even worse was that the Marines were there on a humanitarian mission to protect the people of Lebanon for the Islamic whackados.

Don't worry. The Marines are still planning on getting them back. We are justing waiting for the cowards to do something stupid, like a full scale invasion into Israel. Then it will be open season on them all. Er! Get Some!!
