When Elijah went to the mountain, he heard the earth tremble with an earthquake and volcano, and then a great worldwind, but the Lord was not in them. Then, a still small voice. And there he found God.

Be still and know, says the Psalmist. In the quietness of your heart when you shut out the world, be mindful of that still small voice. It's wordless, just a seeing and knowing and understanding.

My mom liked the "early will I seek him" strategy...she always got up very early in the morning before everyone else was awake. She would sit on the back porch and enjoy the sunrise over the mountains while reading her bible and praying.

My dad has a version of the "go up the mountain alone to pray" strategy...he would leave the house and either go to the church or drive up in the foothills to get away from all the distractions.

I have a friend who has a "prayer closet"...he has a house that is similar to my old house...a big walk-in closet with a window. He put a comfortable chair next to the window, put a lock on the door, and he goes in there to get away from the kids and TV and everything else that can steal his attention.

The bible says to be quiet and listen. I tend to do that late at night after my son is in bed. I turn off the TV and curl up on the sofa with a blanket and my bible. When the other "voices" in my head (my sometimes chaotic thoughts) won't be quiet, I consciously rebuke them..."shut up" I say when I start replaying a meeting at work or start worrying about a problem...then I ask God to help me be still and to calm my mind so I can hear him.

(1) Christians are assimilating to a culture of busyness, hurry and overload, which leads to ...
(2) God becoming more marginalized in Christians’ lives, which leads to ...
(3) a deteriorating relationship with God, which leads to ...
(4) Christians becoming even more vulnerable to adopting secular assumptions about how to live, which leads to ...
(5) more conformity to a culture of busyness, hurry and overload. And then the cycle begins again

In data collected from over 20,000 Christians with ages ranging from 15 to 88 across 139 countries, "The Obstacles to Growth Survey" found that, on average, more than 4 in 10 Christians around the world say they "often" or "always" rush from task to task.

It's tragic. And ironic. See web link...

http://www.christianpost.com/article/20070730/28677_Survey:_Christians_Worldwide_Too_Busy_for_God.htm

The above web link includes this quote...

"The busy life was found to be a distraction from God among Christians around the globe.

About 6 in 10 Christians say that it's "often" or "always" true that "the busyness of life gets in the way of developing my relationship with God."

I can relate to that! As a teacher I have gotten to where I literally cannot fall asleep at night or get out of bed in the morning without first spending some time with God, asking Him to be with me and get me through the day. I dont' know how most of the time, but God is faithful and He always does it.

We must train ourselves to listen to the still small voice within!
I once heard an interesting story: This guy who was a Christian and was repeatedly harrassed by this one particular man at work told this story. He was standing on the lunch line one day, as they moved along the Christian poured himself a bowl of hot soup which partially ran down his hand and burned him. The other man commented: "oh and now you expect me to eat that soup after you washed your hands in it"? The Christian wanted to throw the soup in his face, which would have been the reaction of the flesh. Instead he held back and heard that still small voice within that absolutely silenced the man. God led him to buy the man's lunch. Ouch! would your flesh fight that one? Mine would. But it worked the righteousness of God.

We can start by listening. God speaks when He has our attention. Make a quiet time for Him to speak you. Reach out to Him in prayer and make time to fellowship with Him. I like to study and dwell on the Lord and listen for His voice in the wee hours of the morning when the world is sleeping. My God never sleeps and He knows when I am seeking Him. He teaches me the most at these times. Sometimes we have to just make time to meditate on God's word, and shut the world off! You will begin to look forward to your time with God! I promise!

Well, God says we are supposed to take 5 minutes or more everyday and just relax and listen for/to Gods voice. Prayer is also being in His presence, and listening to Him and praising Him. So basically just tune out the worldly crap and tune into God. Its like a radio station, when the radio is turned off we can't hear anything, but when we turn it on and tune in we hear things clearly, its like we are the receivers.

In the busiest time of days, I make sure I absolutely stop, go somewhere quiet and talk to God with no distractions.
The Holy Spirit is strong and I get instructions from God..
I am never too busy to listen to God and thankfully He is never too busy to listen to me...
