Money is the way to go.
A gift card is good in theory, but the child would need to have that store nearby and you must know that she definitely likes and wants what that store has to sell.
My kids have everything they need plus more. (But NOT all they *want* - different story, LOL!)
Money gives flexibility and responsibility. Also, combined with money gifts from others, it enables the child to save up for and buy "big ticket" items that they really, really want.
