North. More people. More factories. More rail lines. More Navy. More Army. Recognized government by foreign nations. Did not have to worry about slaves rebelling so did not have to have a large home guard. Morally correct.

South. More rural so men were better with horses and using guns. More ports. Better Generals. Europe wanted cotton.
More inventive in thought. (submarines, iron clads, etc.)

South was better at the start of the war because the North has shitty generals. They were all too conservative and did not want to get into a fight. Lincoln had to fire a bunch before he got to Grant.

at the beginning of the civil war, the south was using guerilla tactics and the north really had poor leadership, president lincoln went through lots of generals until he found general grant and he already knew that having general sherman in tennesee was just perfect for the long campaigns.the north had so much more manufactiring and production plus a larger population to choose from.the south merely had agriculture, but the south was wealthy from this as cotton was a king crop, worldwide

Strengths for the North- more technology, better training
Strengths for the South- knowledge of the land, good supplies

The south was more effective because they knew the land that they were fighting on....the land was totally new to the Northerners. Its much easier to fight a war when you know all the places to hide.

North: more industry, more people, more railroads, more telegraph lines.

South: interior lines of communication (they did have to go around northern positions to move troops), better morale at the start of the war, more skilled riflemen, too much coastline for the US Navy to blockade when war started.

It was really a war of attrition. The South was doomed from Day One.
