Many will choose remington's 870 and many will chose mossberg's 500.

I'm gonna go with mossberg model 500 because thats what I own. its great, comes with ten year warranty. I think it dissasmbles easier than the remington. there are endless things that you can do with either one, they will both serve you well.

I bought a nice Mossberg new for $230. It's been great. Dual extractors function more reliably than the singles on the 870. Like the other guy said, they're a little harder to field strip, based on the number of parts, than the 870, but I watched the video and now it's no problem to strip the whole thing down and put it back together in a minute or two. They're both simple to work on. The Remington has magazine extentions that bolt on to the end of the tube, and have to be braced so they don't bend or break off. If you want an 8-shot mossberg, there is a new magazine tube/barrel available on www.brownells.com that replaces the one on the six shot model. Barrels for the Mossy are cheaper, as well. When loading a Mossy, you won't ever bite your fingers on the shell elevator, as it stays in the up position unless the bolt is all the way back, unlike the 870, which just flips up for a moment on the forward stroke. Also, an 870 for under $300 is going to be one of their cheap express models, and isn't likely to function very well. Mossberg doesn't have discounted grades of shotgun, but they do have the Maverick line of shotguns that are about the same, but are produced cheaper.

Their are only two real choices for good shotguns under $300. The 870 Remington or the 500 Mossberg. I have hunted with both, repaired both, and cleaned both shotguns. I vote Remington 870 hands down.

Mosberg is less expensive, but is a pain in the rear-end to field strip and clean. The Remington I own has been on some of the nastiest duck hunting trip you can imagine in the marshes of SE Texas and SW Louisianna. It has never once misfired or given me any trouble.

While I would suggest the 870, the most important thing is to find a shotgun that fits you. With your eyes closed, move the gun to your shoulder. When you open your eyes, you should be looking straight down the barrel. This will make the biggest difference in shotgunning.

"Mosberg is less expensive, but is a pain in the rear-end to field strip and clean."

ROTFLMAO!!!!

Anyone that thinks an 870 is easier has simply never held a Mossberg, plain and simple. The "easier" claim always stops short of the trigger group etc....I wonder why that is?

Anyone that says an 870 is easier to repair is flat out a liar. I have close to $200 in Remington tools on my bench....the only ones that a Mossberg requires are simple hand tools. There is no part on a Mossberg that can't be removed/repaired/replaced in less than five minutes total. anyone that tries to say that about an 870 is blowing smoke.

The *only* functional thing that an 870 has over a Mossy is the easily extended mag tube....which simply tells you to get the long Mossberg instead of the short one when you buy. How much easier can that be? The list of pros the Mossy has over the 870 can be counted on both hands.

Both the Mossy and the Remington are good guns. You need to try both and find what fits you best.

Mossberg 500 all the way, and I'll tell you why.
The weapon's safety. The Mossberg's safety is mounted on top of the receiver, rather than behind the trigger. It's far easier for me, and for everyone I've introduced it to who doesn't already have experience with a safety on the trigger group, to work quickly in the field, and it's ambidextrous.
Five in the magazine by default.
Fast easy barrel changes with a wide variety of barrels available for different purposes, 18.5-28" smoothbore, 21-24" rifled for slugs, even a muzzleloader conversion.
Every option for the 870 except the magazine extensions are available for the Mossberg.
$200 at Wal-Mart.

Hands-down Remington 870. You can get either 12 or 20 gauge models all for under $250. They also are extremely modifiable with endless barrel options. They are also the #1 choice among law enforcement today.

The remington spr220 cowboy shotgun is an excellent, reliable gun for about $250. They are available in both 20 gauge and 12 gauge. The website says they are $332 but most gun shops sell them for less than that.
