I've just purchased some dark brown couches, and am concerned that they may eventually fade. I love to have the windows open in my home and for my next purchase may consider a lighter color.

It depends on the fabric, more than the color. Some fabrics are very colorfast, meaning they don't fade much. Some fabrics fade quickly in the sun. Some, like silk, will actually deteriorate in sunlight. Light colored fabric made from wool fibers will turn yellow in sunlight. If you prefer to have darker colored furniture, but like the sunlight streaming in, consider investing in a solar film which is applied directly to the window to limit the U.V. rays.

Over exposure to sun will fade anything. If you are concerned make sure the window exposure has some sort of covering that will cut down on the amount of sun that hits them. This is true for hardwood floors as well. There are custom sun shades available that give you light but reduce the UV rays so you can protect your furniture and floors.

White and cream may not necessarily fade, but over exposure to intense morning or afternoon sun can also deteriorate the material (whether it's cloth, vinyl, or leather).
