Brakes can be checked by putting in reverse and hitting the gas, the parking brakes and shoes on the rear won't hold except so much.

You didn't say manual or automatic but I'm guessing automatic... something could be not holding in the transmission and give you the sign but not want to back up if something isn't holding internally... but something I'm guessing is either not getting enough pressure or not holding...

best to go have it checked out somewheres to make sure

It sounds to me like there is a servo piston not actuating. It could also be the reverse band out of adjustment. The best thing to do would be to take it to a transmission repair shop and have it pressure checked.

I'd say something in the transmission. I had an earlier Ford pickup same thing happened, the reverse band burned out.

My guess is the transmission, have it checked out. May need the bands replaced.

good luck
