Margurka is correct as far as it goes, but did not answer the question directly. Some bright soul in the past noticed that if there was a pinhole in the wall, an image of the scene beyond would project in reasonable focus upon the opposite wall. Someone finally had the gumption to make a box, most likely of wood, with just such a hole in one side, and enough space inside for a man (and it likely was a man) to get in and put a sheet of vellum or wood, or maybe even that newfangled example of hi-tech wizardry, paper in the image path, and trace an exact replica of whatever scene the box had been transported to. Presto! no more errors in rendering, and the job could be completed in a matter of minutes, instead of days, weeks, or months. Furthermore, with paper and poncing, multiple copies of the picture could be made, and if one used assistants, an assembly-line of sorts could turn them out by the dozens. This box was called a "camera obscura." When glass lenses were invented in the 15th or 16th century, another bright soul realized that the image could be made brighter and brought to an even sharper focus by replacing the pinhole with one. It only remained for the discovery of how to utilize the light-sensitive qualities of silver halide compounds and permanently fix the image with sodium thiosulfate to make photographic film to replace the still-tedious task of hand-drawing the image with a mechanical process that put the ability to record a scene in the hands of everyone. Digital photography merely has replaced the original mechanical process with a more efficient system.

The camera played a large role in creating our national parks system. The camera created entire new industries such as portrait photography, documentary photography, photojournalism, camera manufacturing, film manufacturing and processing and printing. (Thank you, George Eastman). The camera was a great equalizer in society - now the common people could have grandma and grandpa immortalized whereas before only the wealthy could afford to have portraits painted.
