The cross symbolizes to me the needless sacrifice of a human being, and the over glorification of that sacrifice. To me the cross is the embodiment of the sadism that is at the heart of theistic religion, specifically the Judeo-Christian version of theism. The cross implies that justice can be met by the sacrifice of an innocent for the supposed offenses of the guilty. So far from exalting justice, the cross subverts justice. It teaches that inflicting cruelty and pain on others is a virtue, and that God’s notion of mercy is quite different than ours. The cross, and its message, is ultimately antagonistic towards life on earth, and things we hold dear. The cross is the very symbol of why Christianity can no longer be relied upon as a moral guide for our modern world.

how funny and sad it is that so many people misinterpret a mythological reference to the southern cross constellation (as the place where the sun sets at the winter solstice) to be an actual historical event.

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is every one who hangeth on a tree"), that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

The torture and death of Christ. That's why we don't worship the cross. Had he been killed by stoning - would we worship a rock, or a gun, or a spear or whatever?
