It is against traditional religion to want what others have.

However, most of the pastors that have been with my church have, at some point, discussed seeing how other pastors live their lives, and "wanting that life."

Is this considered sin?

Wow, this is a tough crowd!

These pastors are saying "I want that life", not "I want to take that guy's stuff." Only the second is coveting. Maybe two out of the 27 answers above acknowledge that difference.

Why shouldn't people have goals? And why shouldn't they have role models?

It's amazing how harsh the religion of "love" can be.

Depends. If they are wanting the material things of that life, then yes, clearly that is covetous. If they are wanting the specific gifts and anointings that that pastor has, then yes, that is also covetous.

However! If they are being inspired by the other pastor or Christian and being like, "Wow, I want to be close to God like that!" that is GOOD. Anything that encourages us to godliness or intimacy with God is good.

It's like the difference between going over to a person's house and thinking, "I wish I had that house." and thinking, "That house is so rad. That motivates me to work harder so I can buy a house I love and learn about how to decorate my OWN house." Of course the Lord wants us to be content with what we have and where He has put us --- but He never wants us to be satisified with the measure of intimacy we have with Him! He wants us to seek Him more!

Edit to add: Yes, they are sinners! We are all sinners. But this particular thing may not be a sin.

Well... it depends on if your pastor is wanting to have certain things that the other pastors have... such as their car, house, etc.

But if he is just saying that he wishes that He could have a closer relationship with God like the other pastors... that is not a sin. Because we all should want a closer relationship with God.

If they covet, then yes, but surprise, every pastor sins every day just as every person sins everyday. The difference is that Christians know what sin is, admit they do it, and rely on Christ and only Christ to remit their sins. Not their deeds, works, reputations, Christ. Then again, perhaps the life he sees that he desires is a more broken and sacrificial life that he merely lacks courage to attain.

"Sin" is a complex thing because we humans are full of imperfection. According to the Bible, "sin" is that which displeases God, and anything short of perfection displeases this God.

Let me clarify before going on that I don't believe in "sin" as defined by the Bible; imperfection and error yes, but not "sin".

That being said, we all "fall short of the glory of God", as Paul stated, and thus, all humanity is equally wicked and corrupt before a perfect God. Maybe my thinking is flawed, but this would lead me to believe it inappropriate for ANYONE to be pointing the finger at anyone else, as all are equally guilty of "sin".

Personally, I believe men are imperfect, and often in error, but we are blinded by our preconceived ideas and notions of right and wrong. We act in a way we believe, at least on some level, to be right. I don't consider this to be "sin", I consider it blindness, and our responsibility as humans is to peel back that layer of fog that covers our eyes and realize that everything is interconnected and part of one single entity. One would never, in his right mind, consider severing a limb or hurting himself. When a person comes to truly realize and feel his interconnectedness with all of the cosmos, he will cease all actions detrimental to others, as he realize others are merely an extension of himself.

They have allowed their hearts to be influenced by the worldly spirit instead of preaching Gods word first and foremost, there is plenty of this type of thing going on with T.V evangelists.

For all have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God.

That is why we need Jesus. John 3 16

They are just being human.

They sin too.
