I have had a headache for like four days. I have taken everything I can...advil, tylenol, aleve and so forth. I can't take it anymore. My neurologist is out of town for a week and my regular doctor is out of town until Monday.

For a headache? Really?

This may or may not be a medical concern, depending on the type of headache, any other symptoms, and your history with headaches or other neurological problems. Headache types include sinus headaches, tension headaches, cluster headaches, and migraines. Sinus headaches can be relieved with over-the counter preparations that include an anithistamine, decongestant, and expectorant - you need to see if it contains acetaminophen, and wait until 4 hours have passed before taking it. Tension headaches can sometimes be relieved by massage, warm baths, or heat pads, stretching, and taking a magnesium supplement several times a day. Cluster headaches and migraines generally need prescription meds.

You could visit an outpatient clinic - most towns have these things where you pay around $35- $50 for a visit, and you don't need an appointment. Ours is called QuickCare. If you don't have this type of facility, then an ER is your only choice if you need pain relief before next week.

Unbearable pain is a legitimate reason to go to the ER when you have no other choice.
