i had to go with my sister to get her shots and they said she had to get a shot to prevent cervical cancer.

what is it?

how are they going to give the shot?
just in the arm?

Cervical cancer is a malignancy of the cervix. It may present with vaginal bleeding but symptoms may be absent until the cancer is in its advanced stages, which has made cervical cancer the focus of intense screening efforts utilizing the Pap smear. In developed countries, the widespread use of good-quality cervical "Pap smear" screening programs has reduced the incidence of invasive cervical cancer, by 50% or more. Most scientific studies have found that human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is responsible for virtually all cases of cervical cancer.

A new vaccine called GRADASIL has been developed for prevention HPV which is the main reason for getting this of this type of cancer. It has to be taken in three doses in 6 months and it will not hurt at all. Please note for the Patients who have already this Cancer the Vaccine will not work. Please note the details of this vaccine as under -

GARDASIL is a vaccine that was co-developed by CSL Limited (CSL) and their clinical development partners. and manufactured by CSL and Pfizere. Gardasil prevents cervical cancer and pre-cancerous lesions caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV). GARDASIL prevents HPV 16 and 18-related vulva and vaginal high-grade pre-cancerous lesions. GARDASIL also prevents genital warts and low-grade cervical abnormalities caused by HPV 6 & 11. GARDASIL is given in 3 doses over a 6 month period. GARDASIL can be administered by your GP to girls and women aged 9 to 26 years. GARDASIL is not intended to by used as a treatment for cervical cancer or HPV infection.-

Yes, it's a shot to prevent HPV which causes cervical cancer. It has just come out but there is hope that it will impact the number of women that eventually get this type of cancer. Hopefully in a few years cervical cancer will be a thing of the past if this works and we can get girls vaccinated.
