there is a cat problem out there nicknamed scabby cat which can be caused by a multitude of things, mainly allergies or fleas. My cat would get it every year and have to go in for a shot. Three years ago it just stopped happening and she has been fine ever since. Check this out.

Could be just a skin funk, especially if he's grey. Grey cats seem to be more prone to skin conditions. Talk to your vet and get him a medicated bath. Even if he doesn't seem to have fleas, the Frontline Flea treatment was actually prescribed to my mom's dog for her seasonal skin allergies. Turns out there is something conditioning in the formula -- may be the same for cats.

Well this happens to my cat a few times a year. My cat has allergys. It seems that maybe your cat has allergies, not to anything in particular. When my cat gets allergies, shes kinda lazy and doesnt eat. Her hair falls out and she licks it raw. Take him to the vet and the vet will most likely prescribe pills.

I rescued a cat that had fleas. I put flea meds on her, got rid of the fleas, but then she developed these same kind of scabs on her neck and under her chin. I doctored them w/a couple of different meds, but that didn't help. SO....I took her to the vet! He said she had a SKIN INFECTION, so he gave her a steroid shot (for the itching), and had me give her a week/s worth of Clavamox (amoxicillin). That took care of it, her hair grew back, and she's beautiful now. So, you probably should let a vet see him. Good luck......

Allergies/allergies to fleas/ or a combo - use flea meds on the back of his neck and try to feed him a cat food for allergies and it should start clearing up rather quickly (few days)

Sounds like some kind of allergy - possibly to fleas, possibly to something in your yard or house. Time to visit the vet.

Could be fleas, etc. Or it could be stress from another animal or person that she is licking herself raw out of stress. Or something else. Check with a vet.

Could be food allergies, what does your cat eat? Something similar happened with mine till I realized she was allergic to the stuff in her dry food. Got rid of the dry food and she's been fine ever since.

Sounds like a parasite, like ringworm or mange mites. Get your cat to a vet for some ointment.
