Enlightenment....
En = Immersed in
Lighten = the inner light
ment = via a state of conscious awareness of that light.
Those who attain recognize the unity of all things. For them there is no you and I, there is only us. The needs of the "I" are indistinguishable from the needs of the us (or all).
Those attained, serve all. Love all.
Those attained see only the radiance of God all around them. Their experience in reality is of a system of loving guidance. They learn from those things that make them uncomfortable and allow their spirit to grow. These things that seem uncomfortable are seen as the guidance of a loving Heavenly Father.
To paraphrase a Holy text:
"Yea! Who is the initiate to the academy on high? It is the righteous! Yea! Who is the righteous? It is the one who does not know sin or evil!"
Notice! It does not say one who does no sin or evil. That is next to impossible. For even one who follows rigorously the rites and rituals of his religion will be found to be un-righteous by those of a different religion. Heck! Look what they did to Jesus! OUCH! So righteousness in this instance, is then the indwelling spirit of Man before the fall. Before eating of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. This type of righteousness then is one of the first revelations given to the enlightened.
The enlightened never claim enlightenment for they know the awesome nature of God is un-knowable.
Thus:
Those who say they know, do not know. Those who say the do not know, know.
The enlightened do not judge anyone.
They never hold themselves above anyone.
They forgive all, thus they are forgiven
They talk of peace.
They speak of brother love.
They look for the good in all things.
The enlightened have a special radiance about them that is seen by those with a trained eye.
The enlightened are hopeful.
They believe and faithfully hold fast to the promise of the fruitfulness of their belief.
Enlightenment is within all, but not all have removed the veil of ego that conceals that light. (see my friend NBM’s answer. She has that indwelling light! See how it shines?)
This little light of mine... I'm gonna let it shine!
How about you?
Blessings and peace to all,
All in all,
B

To be enlightened is to believe something other than you once did.It is like you once had a belief and you learned differently then you have been enlightened. To become enlightened is to become "in the know".There is a historical era is called the Enlightenment .It followed the Dark Ages.It was a time when aesthetics replaced warfare and violence and mass poverty and starvation. You could also think in terms of being Reborn. From becoming a vile sinner to a cleansed good person.

A person that has reached enlightenment or is enlightened has no trace of ego. They are the most humblest of all, the servant of servants. They only give and ask nothing of themselves. They have nothing as God alone provides everything they need. To see someone enlighted, go see Amma (Mata Amritanandamayi). A person that is enlightened are illuminated. You can see and feel it within yourself. Amma is the brightest sun in this Universe.

Enlightenment simply means to realize who you are and the nature of the universe/God (which is the same thing). You are Awake to what is.
After that...who knows? You life each moment and the future is uncertain. If you don't get too attached to enlightenment, then understanding deepens and the "self" totally false away.
If you are enlightened, then you can recognize it in others...before then you don't really understand enlightenment and therefore are unable to recognize it when it is there.

enlightenment is the stage where a person realises who he is for what he is and the true meaning of life. itt is when a person emerges from his immature understanding about the world and himself. the time where a person is not able to use his own understanding whithout a guidace of another is called immaturity. when mature, he will have the courage to use his own understanding whithout the help of another. after that the way of life of a person changes. he will accompany peace, calmness, he will be cauthios in what he does and says and even eat and drink. these changes lets us know when someone is enlightened

Enlightenment is basically realizing that the physical world is an illusion. There's a saying that fits the rest of your question well (though I do not know the original author):
"To those who understand, no explanation is needed. To those who don't, no explanation is possible."

When your conditioned identity (your illusions about yourself and the world) is gone, nothing remains but the authentic Self. You are awake in the now and appropriate in your choices and interaction. After that your experience of reality stabilizes - synchronizes with your essential nature which is WHAT you love. Your true passion and purpose. Only then can you become all that you are capable of becoming.
How do you know when someone else is enlightened? "You know them by their fruits" - what they produce in reality, i.e. their experience of reality.

to be given knowledge and the understanding at the same time....from an outside source..and you know it wasn't you...it makes you much "smarter and wiser" (for lack of other words) and, also, makes you want "more" like an inner desire, driving desire..caution is a word you should know...but when you meet another? it will be like two lights coming on together and nothing in the whole world but you and them matters at the time...you will share and discuss things and enjoy it! Peace! :)

enlightenment is many different things.
destruction of the ego, saying yes to the moment and "completely awake"
what happens after that is what happens after that.
seflessness, love, compassion for all living beings, they have knowledge of all their past lives. but you cannot know when someone is enlightened. only he who is enlightened knows he is enlightened.
