I'm completely for gay marriage because people should be able to marry who they want. If you don't believe in it, don't do it! And marriage isn't "holy" anymore i.e. the divorce rate.

Because marriage should be a union between a man and a woman and for "legitimacy" of the resulting children. There is no reason for same sex marriage. If you choose that lifestyle and you have someone you really love call them your life partner. Why do you need a piece of paper anyway?

I love this Question!! it actualy makes the smart people think. resons like " its yucky" or "ts gross" are very childish resons. where as the reson given bassed on ligitmacy actualy makes a small dagree of sence. how ever given how little ligitamcy matters in out society I dont think its a very valid reson now. also the constatution doenst talk about marrage. in all honesty I cant think of a single good reson why gay marrage should not be recognized as a ligal union. and I am really trying hard to come up with one that makes some resonable amount of sence. sorry I just cant do it. edited to add
sad blue, she wasnt attacking relgion she was asking for a reson. she also wasnt singling out religus people to ask atmitdely mabe she should have posted this in the LBG area but she didnt she posted it here. let me say a few things about religion in relation to the american constatution.
the constatutuin had to say in the 14th amendment
"No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."
well bye continuing to disallow gay marrage states such as my own ( I am ashamed to admit) where religous people make the laws are abriding the privilages of citizens. as well as depriveing homosexual people of EQUAL protection under the law.

It shouldn't be illegal. Gay love is just as valid as straight love and gay people are just as deserving as the tax breaks and insurance benefits that married people get.

The opposition to gay marriage is based on religious dogma and/or homophobia, and I don't think we should base our laws on such things.

By removing religion from the equation there is no reason way you shouldn't marry your mother, father, brother, sister, dog, cat, goldfish or pet rock for that matter you love them too.

Marriage is for two people who love each other! If marriage can not be an outline to join two individuals together that love each other , and want to make a family by either having children, or adopting them, then no one has the right to stop them, or say that they can not be together!

Why should marriage be legal? Marriage is derived from religious practices. Perhaps the government should get out of all religous practices and not be in the business of recognizing any marriage.

My believe is that there should be religious Marriage and civil unions. Marriage should only be prohibited by the congregation of the Church/Synogogue/etc administering the marriage. Civil Unions should be by the state, with no religous implications, and not prohibited in any way.

I can't think of a single reason, personally. I would like to add, however, that we should legalize it but we should not force any church to perform the ceremony unless they want to.

Update: "If everyone was gay...who would be left to make babies?" Allowing gay marriage doesn't make everyone gay... are you seriously worried that once gay people are marrying each other that you'll "convert" or something? That's only true if you already are gay and haven't admitted it to yourself yet. I swear, it isn't contagious!

1. Because the overwhelming majority of Americans want it to be illegal.

2. Because gay people already have a right to marry. They have just as much a right to marry someone of the opposite sex as you and I do.

3. Because if we legalized man-man marriage or woman-woman marriage, it won't be long until we have to legalize marriage between siblings, parents and children, multiple spouses, close relatives, adults and children, maybe even humans and pets. Re-defining marriage based on every sexual orientation out there is a very slippery slope.

4. Why did you ask this question on the Religion section, and then disqualify any religion-based answers to it?

I think it should be illegal, but if you get right down to it it doesn't matter what you think, it's the Constitution.

And basically, it depends if you believe in interpreting the Constitution strictly or loosely. Meaning, if you interpret it strictly, you say "It doesn't say we can have gay marriage, therefore we can't". If you interpret it loosely, you say "It doesn't say we can't have gay marriage, so we can".

It's a conundrum.

Marriage is a man and a woman - Sorry!
Gay unions are a perversion of an important core of any society - marriage and the family - and yes, there are some essential and healthy social cores... and they should be protected.
We have become desensitized socially - the root of homosexuality is often personal trauma... it is very often a manifestation of personal pain or psychological wounding.
We have to turn from the harm that is creates and help and love people who struggle this way - not glorify brokenness and unnatural manifestations. The average gay man has 200 sex partners in his lifetime - it can't be healthy.
We need to stop promoting it and bring healing, actually.
