It is called PETRI DISH - a round transparent shallow dish used to culture cells, bacteria, fungus, etc.

If you are referring to growing bacterial colonies, then that is a petri dish. Someone earlier had said that a clear medium is put in the dish, but there are tons of different color medias that are used. You can also grow bacteria in test tubes with liquid media. Tests can be done on the bacteria on the plate or in the tube, depending on the test, or some culture is put on a slide to do different tests with. When you say discs, the first thing I think of antibiotic susceptibility testing. Hospitals do this with the Kirby-Bauer technique which lays antibiotic discs right on a freshly inoculated petri dish and grown overnight with the discs. That is how your doctor sometimes decides which antibiotic to give since certain ones may not be effective.

Depends. If you want to look at individual cells under a microscope, then what you're looking for is a slide. But if you want to grow a colony of bacteria the you'll need a petri-dish.

The method is called the Kirby-Bauer or disc diffusion technique. I just call them antibiotic impregnated discs.

Oh!, I just noticed the additional comment, 'those round transparent container', that is a petri dish.

A petri dish. A clear medium is poured into the dish and then the bacteria or whatever is introduced and then covered.

I believe you are talking about agar plates. These are gel plates in petri dishes that sometimes contain nutrients and/or antibiotics etc. They distinguish bacteria types.

petri dishes. you can also get things that look like massive contact lenses called watchglasses, but i'm not sure if you would use them for bacteria
