My puppy has fleas very very bad and the vet said they have a pill that you give them and within 30 minutes the fleas fall off. Has anyone ever heard of this?? I want to get some opinions before I use it.

i am a vet tech and the pill you are talking about is called capstar. it can be given up to twice a week and if you have fleas in your house it is recommended that you use if for at least 4 weeks or untill all the fleas are gone... along with the pill you should get some frontline to apply to his back once a month. the pill is safe just make sure you let them know if he is over or under 25lbs. it works great! also a good bath in oatmeal shampoo once a week will help as well. do not use the stuff from the store that says flea killer... it will dry out the skin and cause him to itch even more. that is why oatmeal is best.. it makes his skin and coat soft. if he has fleas really bad it can cause him to become anemic so i would def try to take care of it asap... you can tell by looking at his gums... they should be a healthy dark shade of pink.. if they are pale or white you should probably make an appointment to have him looked at to make sure he's ok. props to you for checking around and wanting to take care of the problem.. most people would just throw the dog outside or not worry about it. fleas can litterally suck the life out of your pet... if you see any "seed like" things around his bottom or the bedding he sleeps on then he probably has a tapeworm.. that is common when a dog or cat has fleas... a tapeworm is just caused by them "eating" a flea. this can be treated with a one time dose of sestex... i wouldnt give this to him unless you see the worms and if you do your vet will want you to bring in a stool sample.. kinda gross but just letting you know what to look for in the future.. good luck and take care of that puppy :P

Yeah, that would be Capstar. It's very good, and fleas will all die quickly - but it's not a preventative, so you need to get hold of something like Frontline or Revolution from your vet. These will keep fleas off your dog for at least a month.

You may also need to spray your house, as this is where most of the fleas will be living.

Yes you can get a pill to kill fleas, but you really should use Frontline, Advantix, or Advantage, as they stop fleas from breeding. Fleas only come on to the dog to feed, and live, and breed in your carpet's, furniture, and crevices in your home. Systemic insecticides render the fleas sterile, they feed off the dog, and become sterile, so in a few weeks, your home will be rid of fleas.

Get some flea shampoo wait a couple days and then put advantage or avantix on him. Make sure you flea spray your carpet and vaccum. The flea medication will kill the fleas. Make sure to reapply every 3-4 weeks.

i have never heard of that but we always just use dawn dish washing liquid and let it soak on the puppy for bout 5 to 10 minutes it'll kill the fleas and eggs.

We used frontline on our pup and it worked very well. They have a coupon on the website too.

We used something like that for a cat. It didn't work quite that quickly and it doesn't kill the eggs.
