Magley and Vishal, does it matter to you that the ones who were so vehemently opposed to Civil Rights were the White Christian Majority? Has that thought occured to you?

When a belief system is based on binary thought and opposed outcomes (promised and threatened) the results are predictable and not a coincidence.

Many of those are coincidences, because pointing out that this was happening while that was happening says nothing about a corrollation between events. I understand what you are getting at, I think, and it's that forcing religion on people is not necessarily the better choice, and can lead to evils in itself. I can certainly agree with that.

And while I may be agnostic, being pro-life is not a specifically Christian belief. Beliefs and morals are not specific to religion. ' Thou shalt not murder' is a commandment; it is a law as well, and for good reason. Teenagers deserve to die like the babies they kill, if that is the 'choice' they want to make.

Can I get a thumbs down for the truth?

Your question is a little skewed.

Unless there is a proven link between school prayer and a better society, EITHER argument for or against school prayer is null and void.

How do we know that it is school prayer that is soley responsible for racism, sexism, classism and lack of equal rights?

How do we know that it is the loss of school prayer that is soley responsible for teen pregnancy, crime, school shootings?

No comprehensive study has isolated it as the chief cause of either.

Let's not forget that there are many other factors in society other than whether a school makes children pray or not.

We should also keep in mind that the "good old days" of the past had many ills but society demanded we HIDE these things. There has always been promiscuity, adultry, crime, injustice etc. Back in those days, we white washed everything. Just because there was less divorce does not mean marriages were happier, women just had less options and it was scary to leave as being a single woman was not financially possible or socially acceptable. Just because there were no gay parades did not mean there were less gay people. They were just underground or hiding in sham marriages, like Cole Porter and Rock Hudson or Mc Carthy. Just because there were no blatent evidence of teen pregancies did not mean kids were chaste angels and not fooling around in back seats to Nat King Cole.

What society has done to a large extent exchange one set of problems for another. America is a young nation, we are still having growing pains.

My hope is that one day we will find more of a balance between equal rights, civil liberties and eliminating societial ills as much as possible, like many Scandanavian countries have done. But remember that they have been nations far longer than we have and experimented with Church dictated empire, monarchy, facsim, conservative democracy and now a more liberal democracy to get where they are now.

Some of the people who promote the God and prayer in the schools think the world will become just like on "Leave It to Beaver". This is a disgusting thought, and it was a world which never truly existed.

When you remove God and prayer from any institution such as public schools, what would you expect..You have opened the door for the demons of Hell to flow in and rain havoc on poor innocents.

Where there is no standard of morality, prayer or faith, there is always destruction and pain.

God help us to repent as a nation as well as individuals and fight to take back what we idlely sat by an watched the atheist and unconcerned remove from our country..

America was birthed in Prayer, Christian values and Godly principles..That is what made her great and kept her free.

" If my people which are called by my name will humble themselves and pray, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from Heaven and will forgive their sins and heal their land.." 2 Chronicles 7:14 King James Version of the Holy Bible

We are quick to say " God Bless America" but, may America ( one more time ) Bless her God..

EDIT: To Hope... Timothy McVeigh (OK City Bomber) was baptized a Roman Catholic. During many of the adult years of his life McVeigh considered himself an agnostic. But prior to his death he received Sacrament of Extreme Unction. As a child he attended the Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church in Pendleton, New York, where his father remains a member. A memorial mass was held for him there on February 15th, 2002.

It's not a coincidence, but it's also not the case that prayer in schools caused all those other bad things. There are hidden variables at play.

They were all caused by a general lack of civil rights throughout the country.

Wow! I guess god must have been only in schools for some of you to blame the decline of the school on his ouster. I don't guess any of these kids had religious parents who possibly should shoulder some of the blame for the rearing of these kids? god must not have been in the home or in the church or in the car or anyplace else, just in school.

Vishal is right, making corolation argument can only be speculation, Its also true that an increase in ice cream sales in some areas shows direct corolation with the number of violent crime, including murder and rape, does this mean that ice cream makes you murder and rape? NO, so ultimately i think this corolational argument is invalid, however, religious people will make this same corolational argument, and this is a good refutation of it...
