Oh, it's very normal to have delays like that because of anesthesia wearing off, etc.

To answer your question, I have never heard of anyone being told that their pet was okay after surgery and then having something go wrong.

It's not at all unusual. Sometimes they just feel the animal was particularly sensitive to the anesthesia, and they want to keep an eye on him a little longer. Or, the surgeon may have been running late that day and the surgery may have been performed later than originally planned. They would have told you if something was going wrong. It's okay.

My dog ate chewing gum a few weeks ago, and had to stay overnight. They originally told me to pick him up at noon, and then when I called they said the poison control's information center suggests a 15 hour monitoring for small breeds, which my dog is, so they wanted to hold him 3 more hours to be sure. When I picked him up, everything was absolutely fine, they were just being cautious.

A lot of times if it's a surgery, it is hard to estimate when a dog will "come down" from the anesthesia. They can't send the dog home with you until it has woken up, so I would count on that and not anything else. Also, maybe an emergency happened at the clinic and they had to take care of someone else's dog and had to operate on yours at a later time. It could be anything!

If they didn't tell you something is wrong, then nothing is wrong. They are required to tell you, the pet is your possession.

Hopefully it will be ok. I had that happen once and what had happened was that they ussually would do surgeries in the morning however this specific day there were four emegencies bought in so the vet wasn't able to do the surgeries n morning.
You have every right to ask what is the hold up.

the same thing happened with our cat. after surgery they are very nauseous. that's probably what happened...your dog could have had a reaction the the medicine they gave him when he was put to sleep. If something serious was wrong they would have called you and told you. I'm sure it is a reaction to the medicine or the dog is nauseous.

Sometimes they aren't awake from the anesthesia if they had surgery or something has been called to the vet's attention. if there was a real problem they would have contacted you and told you to come to the office. i would worry too much! It just shows you love them!
