The National Anthem (I assume we're speaking of the United States' National Anthem here) is not so difficult as its reputation would suggest. The trick is to sing it in a key that is appropriate for your voice. The entire range of the piece is only an octave and a fifth (Bb below middle C to F above C above middle C when performed in the key of Bb). The piece only goes down the its lowest note once (on the word "say") so, if your range is a little narrow, choose a low key where that lowest note might be a bit grumbly, but make sure that the highest notes are still within reach.

And for heaven's sake, KNOW THE WORDS!!!

Yes everyone is correct in saying you must sing it correctly and with respect. But my little trick to the song is starting it LOW enough ( assuming you re singing it A Capella) so you can hit the high note. Thats how I do it. Start LOW.

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

It is not the easiest thing to sing.....just sing it!Even though today there are a lot of improvisations, you should learn the straight version, just so you will know it ...and then I guess it is ok to improvise; it is the style of the day...

I don't get why people say the song is so difficult; it's really not. Anyway, sing it with respect, and make sure you know the song (including the exact text).
