If he's going to live with you, have these conditions in place:
1. Assume he can't structure his time wisely in the real world, and insist that he find a job immediately.
2. Participate in counseling appropriate for his problems...usually, coming out of prison...AA or NA meetings...they are free and deal with addiction. Psychotherapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists are expensive (in that order, least to most expensive). Maybe he can receive pastoral counseling from a church.
3. Help him find a pro-social support system.
4. Don't settle for promises to participate in 1-3, set timelines, and if he does not move on them, show him the door.

IF HE IS GETTING OUT OF PRISON AND GOING BACK TO SOCIETY, HE WILL HAVE A LOT OF MENTAL PROBLEMS.
INMATES I DEALT WITH LIFE WITHOUT, ALWAYS WANTED TO SEE THE NEW COINS AND PAPER MONEY. SOME SAW AND HELD A WHEAT PENNY THE LAST TIME THEY WERE OUT.
SOCIETY HAS CHANGED, COMPUTERS, CARS, GAS PRICES, WAGES ETC. TREAT THEM AS ANYONE ELSE UNTIL THEY GIVE PROVOCATION TO WARRANT OTHERWISE. THEN SEEK HELP AND COUNSELING AS NEEDED.
MOST PRISONERS HAVE AN OUTREACH SOURCE WHEN THEY GET OUT NOW A DAYS.
