I don't mean close friends or family members ( although they can apply to this question). I mean guys or girls you just started dating or neighbors you just met, or someone you are just starting to get to know...Does it annoy you???

It really doesn't matter who it is. If they show up unannounced it's rude and insensitive. My best friend had the same problem with his MIL and here's how he handled it: 1st offense: Dear MIL, please call before you come next time so we have time to be proper and be properly prepared. 2nd offense: he was in his tidy whities and in comes MIL again. He said No offense MIL but didn't I ask you to please call before coming over? Next time you come over like this, you may find me in my b-day suit! 3rd and FINAL offense: MIL & FIL came in early morning unannounced and there he was in all his glory for them to see! They left fast, screaming OMG! And: Sorry we'll call first from now on! He also changed the door locks... unannounced!

Oh, I feel ever so much better now. I thought I was the only one who didn't answer my door to welcome people who are too inconsiderate to phone before coming over. With cell phones, even if visiting is a last-minute idea, there is no excuse for not phoning in advance to ask whether it is a good time to visit.
My office is in my home, and my hours are erratic (I'm a writer), and so my home may not be neat and tidy at all times. Many people, I have learned, tend to judge a person by the neatness of the home. Since I do not wish to be judged on that basis, they will not see the interior of my home unless I am prepared to have it inspected.

Yes, it is very annoying. I was taught to always call first before visiting, even my own mother -- and she always calls me first, too.

But, for some reason, my in laws continue to pop in when ever they feel like it. I have voiced my opinion about this to them several times, and they don't get it. It's very irritating when they just walk in the back door announcing, "Knock! Knock! Anybody home?" Grrrr!

A few acquaintances have dropped by, unannounced, too -- but I tactfully let them know that I really appreciate being forwarned when company plans to visit.

Definitely. I was taught it's very rude to go to someone's house without calling first. You never know if someone is sick, or is just having a bad day, and doesn't want to be bothered. Unless a person tells me its ok to stop by unannounced, i don't :-)

Yes, it does. Especially when it's 10 am on Sunday morning and my stupid MIL walks in my front door while I'm standing at the fridge in a tank top and underwear. Because, you know, knocking as you're opening the door is oh so effective.

Yes, because you have no idea what someone may have to do that you might be getting in the way of. They may just not feel like being bothered, which is their right. If it's not some kind of emergency, call me first! It's just tacky bad manners.

While I'm not anti-social, this is something that bothers me. I work full time and then some, go to school full time and am in the planning stages of my wedding. When I'm, especially when I'm just getting home, I want to unwind. Without having to entertain someone.

If someone arrives at my home uninvited and unannounced, they do not get in, I will not answer the door. I did not acknowledge my in-laws, even when they sat outside blowing the horn:) and I actually liked my father-in-law - the mother-in-law, now that's another story lol!

Yes indeed! If I should be working I may have my hands full of paint, or plaster, or Gorilla Glue, and it causes a disturbance not quickly corrected. Especially the plaster or the Gorilla Glue!
