Democracy requires an intelligent literate public...yet, every year American intelligence levels decline into the stupid range. Is a populace fixated on Britney Spears' waistline worthy of the vote?

The government schools are designed to keep the populace dumbed down and indoctrinated into the mindset that they cannot fend for themselves or protect themselves. The rest of the time television is raising them.Besides, everybody knows a democracy doesn't work. When the people realize that they can vote themselves right into the public treasury by electing the candidates that offer the most social programs and wealth redistribution, such as has taken place in this country for years now. After that takes place watch for a steady and swift decline.

Actually, for a long time now, intelligence has been increasing both in the U.S. and elsewhere. Some people call this the Flynn Effect, which you can google if you like.

And yet, what appears to be changing are the available, useful outlets for our intelligence, and consequently, our motivation. It seems as though fewer children are engaged in the learning process anymore, and their intellectual needs are kept at bay by the types of so-called entertainment to which you briefly refer.

It is possible to have apathetic geniuses. It's easy to call people stupid, but in fact most are intelligent and lack only wisdom and a reason to care.

Intelligence should only have been improving over the generations.
Being a very old democracy, and the improved opportunities and intelligence together have shown some people how to misuse or abuse democracy.

No but the right doesn't trust us, at least according to an article I read today. They seem to be trying to steal future elections. Time will tell. They seem to be going to great lengths to stop some people from voting. (allegedly the poor)

We need to improve the quality of education. In the state where I live, I get to hear about the problems. I see what my stepkids bring over for homework. (some good, some weird). All in all, I don't think it matters because Americans have the right to vote. That's not something that should be taken away. It cannot be any worse than what it is today.
Bush/Cheney; They have to be the worst in history.

So, you think because your a Brit that you enjoy living under democracy, when did you crawl out from under that rock, recently?

You may not like the USA, but when it comes to trying to insult us, you might want to get some facts straight first:

We could take your teeny weenie country and place it in the United Staes and you would be very lucky to take up maybe two of our states in size. For being such a rude and obnoxious people, no wonder your country will never become a superpower, there isn't any real intelligence over there, across the pond, is there?

If your such a mighty powerful country, how come we kicked your butts out of this country, huh?

I would suggest if you want to try and insult us, you should take your dolls out of the closet and start talking to them about how smart you think you are, maybe they will listen to you, because we sure won't!

I guess you don't know it, but the U.S. is NOT a democracy. The U.S. is a REPUBLIC.

Yes, we are far too dumb for Democracy. Instead, we're still striving to be bigoted, stereotyping half-wits like you. But those of us with an education will make appointments for frontal lobotomies so we can "rise" to your level.
