Hollywood gives people such a wrong impression of police work.
Many of the offenders are some genius or millionaire. And the cops have technology at their finger tips.... that does not exist or would take weeks for the FBI lab to actually do...
But, in a way I agree with you as it shows crooks the In's and out's of investigative practice. But, you must remember... most criminals are that way because they are uneducated fools or people acting in the heat of the moment or under the influence of some drug or booze.

Most of the stuff on fictional TV shows is fictional. Studying those shows will not make someone a better criminal, but may make them more qualified to play one on TV.

I'm sure they've picked up on some stuff. Just like anything else on tv. Back in the day when MTV used to play music videos, we "learned" the new dance moves. And the home repair shows have taught us to do self fixer uppers. People who play sports have picked up on their favorite athletes successful moves. And I'm sure everybody out there has picked up a few "tricks" by watching the "sexy" channels............or animal planet!! lol!!!! Just kidding, sorry I could not resist. But definitely yes, if you have the capability to learn, you WILL learn even if it's not good.

A police detective friend tells me that there has been an increase in the use of bleach as a means of destroying DNA evidence in the past few years, and attributes this to shows like CSI.

Never thought of it that way! But a crime is a crime! and they are all bad! you mean more detailed? and more involved? they are all bad! And yes I think as time goes on maybe so that some crimes are more involved and more detailed due to more technology and more higher education but they are not better crimes! they are worse! crimes I think! and may even cost more to resolve due to the time and money spent on to resolving them! just my opinion! All crimes are bad!!

Maybe a few, but there's a reason that they're criminals and don't work for NASA.

NO
BECAUSE MOST OF THEM ARE RUNNING THE STREETS WHEN THE SHOWS ARE ON AT NIGHT.
THE BEST LEARNING GROUNDS WE HAVE GIVEN TO THE GANGS OF THE 50-60'S WAS THE MILITARY. HERE THEY LEARNED TACTICS, WEAPONS, SELF DEFENSE, SURVIVAL EVASION AND ESCAPE, BOMBS, RANK STRUCTURE.
THINK ABOUT IT NOW. IN THE 50-60'S WE SENT THOSE TO PRISON WHO DID NOT WANT TO GO TO WAR AND WE SENT THOSE WHO DID NOT WANT TO GO TO PRISON TO WAR?
WHEN THEY CAME BACK THEY WERE VERY WELL VERSED AS GROUND SOLDIERS. THANK GOD THEY WERE NOT ALL RAMBO.
