Here are three teachings of Jesus, quoted from the New International Version of the Bible:

1. In Matthew 5:39, Jesus says:
"do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also."

2. In Matthew 5:28-30, Jesus says:
"But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell."

3. In Mark 10:17-22, when a rich man asks what he must do in order to go to heaven, Jesus tells him:
"sell everything you have and give to the poor."

But most Christians don't follow any of these teachings?
Why not?

Many Christians trust & obey Jesus Christ.

I am one of them.

But I don't live by the letter. I follow after the Spirit. The Spirit directs me according to the moment in time. The Holy Spirit has't asked me to sell what I have & give what I have to the poor. So? I don't do that. The Holy Spirit does ask me to give to the Lord what the Lord asks me to give. As far as the rich man goes. His problem was not loving the LORD God with all his heart, mind, soul & strength. He trusted his riches more. If you read more, he knew the latter commandments related to loving other people.

Obedient Christians don't commit adultery. Only disobedient or carnal ones do. And disobedient Christians would rather commit adultery than gouge their eye out. Obedient Christians don't have to gouge their eye out because they aren't lusting after other people.

You are mistaken. We do follow these things. in our hearts we know we are supposed to do these things. but because of lifestyle and sin, we have difficulty. I have been thinking about these things for a long time.
For number one, I practice this. although since I began, i have yet to be attacked. I pray to God that I will not have to experience any assault. Verbal assault being a Christian occurs, and that is easy to turn the other cheek.
For the second, I feel that removing a body part is a last resort. I believe that we have an amount of time to realize our faults and have to correct it. if an individual feels they may never help themselves then amputation I guess is the only option. But, because of what I know, and with a little help from Jesus, we can over come our sins, and won't have to cut anything off.
Now for number 3. I do believe that modern society has over come us all and that materialistic lifestyles have denied us from achieving a truely satisfying life. What I am doing is trying to simply my life, from materialistic things that I really don't need. I do give to the poor. I rarely deny helping any person who asks of my help. actually, I now try to be personal with people who ask of my help. at the least I ask their name, now... because I live a western lifestyle, it has been very difficult to make changes. after reading Mark 10 I worried that I maybe misinterpreting the point. So I prayed to God, to help me understand. The answer I recieved is that I have a place in this world to help in a specific manner. I believe that everything I have is given to me by God. Nothing I own or achieve is without God's grace. So I take nothing for granted. I go with the flow. and in return I give to whom asks of it from me, and I volunteer in the church I belong to. I continue to learn about God, and try to have a stronger connection with God.

Most people complicate the scriptures more than they are. the bible is layed out simplistically. Most antagonists of the bible I have come across never really experience the bible the same way a person who has opened themselves to God does. We are here on earth to make a decision. . .

Are we with God, or Not? its really simple. pick a side. if you pick God, then commitments and responsibilities follow.

if not, and in the end find there is a God, there will be consequences to deal with.

Because we still have the old sin nature. Jesus did not give us these instructions to follow to the letter, but to show us how much we need a savior.

Rom 12:18 tells us that if it be possible, as much as is in us to live peaceably with all men. This is that way that we should look at all of Jesus' commands. Try our best, but do not beat ourselves up when we fail. Granted, with some of us our best needs to be better.

These were not his only commandments. You may want to take a good look at Mat 7:1

On item 3, do you think this is what Jesus wants all people to do? Could it be he answered this man this way for a specific reason and purpose? Or was he trying to make a point to the man regarding his ability to save himself? He asked what he could do. Seeing as it is impossible for us to save ourselves, Jesus gives him an answer that is impossible for him to comply with, thereby showing that no one can be saved by their own merits.

Item 2 also shows the impossibility of compliance. How can one eye offend you by what it sees, and not the other eye? Lust is born in the mind and not the eye. He might just as well of said to cut out your mind and cast that from you.

The first item is easy enough for one who has been given God's Spirit, but near impossible for one who does not have God's Spirit.

You are therefore reading all things superficially.

You need to see the spiritual intent behind what Jesus said and taught; much of it hidden in parables:

Matthew 13:13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.

Much of what he taught was in such a way so that people would not understand and therefore misunderstand and misconstrue.

Because most christians will form a god (jesus), to meet their needs, and liking. They will put him in a little box, and make him there own. Then they will feel good about themselves even when they know they are wrong. They must be good, they have jesus on their side. Too bad they don't realize that the rest of us can see right through their transparent bull-sh*t.

1 possible reason; the above may take only part of what Jesus said in scriptures.
2. There are (to my current knowledge) 7 deviations to God's word. Defining the old testament as Genesis-Malachi, instead of the law of Moses is one of those deviations.

It is the lesson we should fellow. How many people is going to pluck out their eye just because they looked at a girl. There would be a lot of eyeless people. I t means to get rid of the sin not the eye.

The current evidence (and lack of reasonably expected evidence) suggests that there was no Jesus. (1) The bible is far to self contradictory and incoherent to be taken as anything but a fable, and there is no evidence for a deity. Where does that leave your question?

Jesus taught through example. He loved and accepted all people. We should all try that.
