I am Asatru, and Since there are so few of us I look for our related religions/ religions that are close to us. The one I find a lot is Catholicism.

The ones i am more curious in however is the other two revivalists. The Egyptian and the Greeko/roman revival.

So tell me about them. What do they call themselves and what are there goals?

Well if you look at what they (catholics) value. (minus the pope thing, and the whole bit of christianity we dont like)

They are not that different. I heard a very inspred speach by the LA area bishop. If it was written and I changed "God", to Thor or Odin, id only have to change one word and you'd think it was a very inspired speech by an Asatruar.

Good answer.

and Ymmo is awesome becuse she inspires my laziness for looking for things. ^_^

I have several friends from Scandinavia who get a little irritated when Asatru is called a reconstructed religion. There are many places in Sweden and Norway where the "Old Way" (Forn Sidr) never died out. My grandfather was one of these. The way Asatru has been "reconstructed" in the USA is a little different than what is known as Forn Sidr in Europe. USA-style Asatru has more elements of Wicca and Hermetic esotericism in it.

One of the reasons Catholicism is close to Asatru is that the Catholic Church incorporated many of the traditions of Forn Sidr into the rituals to make it more palatable to the northern Europeans. It was very difficult to convert them from a religion of independence to a slave religion.

The Egyptian/Kemetic was actually revived in some form early on - around the 1400's - probably from documents brought back during the Crusades.

From what I understand the Roman revival is fairly recent. It was probably hard to keep it alive right under the Pope's nose...

I am courious as to how you feel Catholicism is similiar to Asatru/Odinism/Heathenism. There are other Faiths similar to Asatru but they are like the pre-Christian Slavic Faith. What it is called I am not sure. The Native American Faiths are similar as well. Any of the Natural religions would be similar. But Cathlicism? How would you seporate the "Chistian thing" from it and its universal aspirations?

Kemetic=Egyptian
Hellenistic=Greek
Romano=Roman
Celtic Recon=self explanitory
Native American, not that they were ever DEconstructed but they are becoming closed to outsiders who abused the rights and going closer to thier roots as well.
And TADA US!!

Thier goals are much like ours Hestia Priestess here on the boards is a Hellenistic. Wreath and Aradia StromCrow are both Celitc Recons. One of my contacts is Kemetic but for the life of me I can't think of who LOL. They attempt to come as close to the Old Ways as possible. They live with in the honor of thier ancestors and thier gods. From what I can tell, little "magic" is practice (Except Kemetic, but the ancients practiced a lot of magic so it very much fits the path) The Celtics have it the worst. They were decimated. Thier temples, thier poems, thier gods....a lot of it is gone or so intergrated into the RCC that they have to dig it out peice by peice. I applaud thier dedication. We only think we have it bad. LOL

The Recon movement is exploding though. Its starting to really break away from the "neo-pagan" movement and standing alone and VERY seperate. It's been really interesting meeting so many recons from so many paths.

Egyptians are Kemetics and Greeks are Hellenists, not really sure what the Roman ones call themselves.

I wqould think they practice similar to the way we do, honoring their gods, living their life in a way they deem honorable, etc.

I disagree with the statement that you consider catholicism closely related to us. if you said Theodism, then I would understand, form what I have seen and heard about certain Theodish groups, they are kinda built after what seems like RC models.
