Lion Brand's site had a free prayer shawl pattern. It uses four skeins of homespun. Sounds like a lot, but it works up pretty quickly.

Update: I used Lion Brand's "pattern finder" and searched for "prayer afghan" and a free pattern did come up.

It's not free, but Lion's Brand yarn has a book on prayer afghans, that has not only the patterns, it also includes prayers for just about every occasion. I love mine, and it wasn't too expensive. Try Michael's, or any knitting store.

I do lots of crocheting myself and am at present making a toddler blanket. i got here across some loose blanket varieties on the positioning under. the only difficulty is they don't have a seek so which you may desire to do slightly digging yet they have some staggering loose varieties. i'm hoping you stumble on you like besides :)

Try your local Freecycle group.
Or a lot of skeins of yarn will come with patterns on the inside of the wrapper.
