A few things. First, there are less officers and enlisted personnel in the Coast Guard than uniformed police officers on the streets of New York City. Secondly, despite that paucity of manpower they are required to carry out missions involving port security and drug interdiction. In addition, there are Coast Guard personnel at Bahrain Island in the Gulf to carry out maritime patrol and interdiction in the war against terror. As a retired Navy Officer I salute all of them and wonder how in hell they can do all of that with so few people.

Yeah. The CG rocks!! and pay little attention to some of the earlier posts. The only thing close to "battleship gray" in the CG is on the Port Security (PSU) boats (99% Reserve duty only), chances of going to Mid-East are slim unless you volunteer and/or are in a PSU (still volunteer - it's a volunteer service), learn to use a weapon over a paint brush (outsided of combat the CG draws and/or uses their weapons more than the other services combined - everyday), learn to take charge: at 19 a Coast Guardsman could be in command of his/her own boat on the front lines of Homeland and foriegn security. Also, though "Coastie" seems to be an accepted nickname for CG members by some members I highly recommend you know your company before using that term. Myself and many others in my unit and prior units do not accept it. We are "Coast Guardsmen"! (or -women), one of Gods nobelist creations, not "Coasties". As for going TAD to another service: good luck! That's a highly valued and saught after opportunity. There's many of us in the CG that want to share our expertise with other services, any where in the world, as we have done since before WWI. SEMPER PARATUS!

USCG is not in the DOD, but rather DHS. Chose an MOS with care. Cooks serve on ships almost exclusively. Duty posts for comm and electronic techs can be a rely station in the Aleutians! But they are great people and do a great job.

Lesson #1 Learn to swim
Lesson#2 Learn Port from Starboard (I can't tell you, that would be cheating, and it's their job to do it)
Lesson#3 Learn how to sleep with lots and lots of people who snore
Lesson#4 Learn how to wash and fold
Lesson#5 Learn to be patient when stupid people give you orders that make no sense.
Lesson#6 Learn to properly operate a paint brush
Lesson#7 Learn to love the color battleship gray.
Hope this doesn't discourage you.
