I was at the vet today, and they gave me a free sample of heartgard to give my puppy tomorrow, but I forgot to ask how often the dogs need this medication (monthly, yearly, twice a year) anyone know?

Actually, if you're giving it strictly as a heartworm preventative, you only need to give every six weeks. The reason why you would give it monthly, is for roundworms, hookworms, and some others. If you're not worried about these, give it every six weeks. The less chemicals the better.
If you ask the makers of HeartGard specifically, that's what they should tell. It's what the reps will tell you.

EDIT: From the Merial (makers of Heartgard) website:

"Protection against Heartworms, and Treats and Controls Roundworms and Hookworms."

Don't give it to your puppy unless you read the instructions properly. Heartgard is once a month, If you start on heart worm prevention, you must keep going with, If you stop at any stage more than a month, you will need to get the dog retested by the vet for heart worm. If your dog contracts heart worm and you give it heart worm you can kill it. If you have any queries after you read the leaflet, speak to the vet who gave them to you.
Also Heart worm prevention is a lot better than the cure. I got one of my rotties from the pound where I used to work on the gold coast (where heart worm is rife) and she had to be treated for heart worm, Shes fine now but its not that nice the treatment.
Heartgard is for the prevention of heart worm only, it does not do intestinal worms

It is given monthly, and it may or may not be year round, depending on your climate. You'll have to talk to your vet to find out if there are any months when the pup doesn't get the med.

Heartguard is a once a month tablet that looks like a dog treat. It should be brown and rectangular. You should break it into smaller pieces to ensure your dog is chewing the pieces and make sure he eats the whole tablet.

Monthly. You can open the box to see if there are more instructions inside.
They usually have stickers in there to put on your calendar to remind you when to give your dog heartguard.

Call them and ask. We give it monthly, but I understand there are some longer versions out.

It should be given monthly. (I would recommend picking an easy date to remember, such as the 1st or 15th of every month.)

Pampered Parrot is correct, it's every six weeks if you aren't worried about internal parasites - this was straight out of the vet's mouth!
