They can be orange, light gray, dark gray, brown, and almost black. The term "tabby" refers to the banding, marbling, and spotting pattern in the fur of many cats. Some cats have these patterns all over their bodies while others have the tabby markings mixed with white areas. You might notice also that these cats have what looks to be like an "M" pattern on their foreheads and curved lines coming from of the outside corners of their eyes and ending under their ears. My father used to joke that if you cut those, their faces would fall off.

Tabby is the marking, not the coloring. And there are different sorts of tabby markings: classic, mackeral, agouti and spotted. Tabbies can be brown, grey, orange or even mixed colors.

Tabby refers to the markings, not the color.
Tabby cats can be many colors.
The tabby pattern usually means stripes, but can also include spots and stripes, swirling patterns, or ticking (small dogs of color, also called agouti.)

A tabby can be any color, typically grey.... but could be red and could be a tortie too.... It's the markings that make it a tabby. Which are stripes.. Also can have white patches.... or stripes just on tail head and legs with white on body.....

There is no specific color that a tabby has to be. Alls tabby means is that it has a "cropped" tail.
