Seriously. Nobody is saying that it has to happen in a church. It's a question of equal legal rights. How would you feel if Muslims or Hindus were legislating all their beliefs here in America?

Some of you CHristians are so damn brainwashed it's not even funny. How is legalizing gay marriage shoving beliefs down your throats? You don't have to run out and marry someone of the same sex simply because there is a law out there that says you can.

The laws against it are biblically based, therefore it is correct to state that CHristians are "legislating their religion".

How would you feel if Hindus were making it illegal to eat beef in this country? Take that ***********. You guys are so delusional it's not even funny.

maybe the gays should start controlling the christians. telling them heterosexual marriage is wrong.

give them a taste of their own medicine.

and then i could just laugh as an innocent bystander. =]

sometimes i wish we could send all the christians to texas and let them split from america and have their own little country. where they can force everyone to believe and behave in the matter that they want. then the rest of us can go on living without having to listening to that whining. =]

Not a Christian against Gay Marriage myself, but what makes them think that they can legislate belief is that a good deal of them live in America, which is a democracy. In a pure democracy, the will of the majority rules. Thus, one doesn't even need a good argument, they just need to be the majority.

Of course, America also has laws specifically designed to help protect the minorities from the majorities.

As a side note, currently the rights are exactly equal, which is the problem. Neither heterosexual nor homosexual men are allowed to marry other men; how is that not equal? The problem is, of course, the heterosexual men don't want to in the first place, while homosexual men probably would at least like the option. So the laws are perfectly equal, but the wants behind the laws, which the laws should be satisfying, are not.

Marriage is contract between unequal parties. It provides each with unique rights and privliges based on differences in gender. Civil unions in many states provide all the contractual protections same sex partners need. They do not by nature need protections of 'marriage'.

Legislating a new type of marriage will also introduce a punishment on churches that refuse to recognize the practice. Governmental agencies will be forbidden to provide services or facilities for churches that do not cooperate. This has already the case for the Boy Scouts.

Interesting perspective.

What I see are those in the gay community pushing for legislation to legalize same sex marriages. Isn't this a case of legislating their beliefs on Christians and the rest of society?

Since when do Islam and Hinduism allow gay marriage? Can you name one culture that traditionally allows a legal marriage between two men or two women?

I'm not talking about within the last twenty or so years, I'm talking about traditionally.

Why is it so important to that minority who approve of gay marriage to shove their beliefs down the throats of the majority of Americans who oppose it?

Are you equating the religious beliefs of others with the supposed civil rights of gays?

My answer is long. I apologize in advance.

Christians against gay marriage will tell you the following:

1. Marriage is supposed to be a sacred institution between a man and a woman.

My answer to that is, it is not the gender of the people involved but the INTENT they bring to the union. Simply because a man and a woman are involved does not make the union sacred. People marry for money, green cards, to just have sex, because they got the girl knocked up, because they want to get out of their parents home etc.

I have two lesbian neighbors together longer than my husband and I. They have TRULY been there for each other through sickness (one battled breast cancer) and health, richer and poorer etc. And raised two kids together. I think they DESERVE to have legal recognition of SOME kind for their union and their family.

2. Marriage is TRADITIONALLY between a man and woman.

Well at one point, marriage was traditionally between a man and several women and concubines. At one point marriage was arranged by parents. At one point a dowery had to be paid. At one time, it was ILLEGAL for a black person to marry a white person etc. Traditions are only as good as their usefulness and relevance to society's ethics.

3. Marriage is to produce children

Then post menopausal women, women who cannot conceive, men with vasectomies or low sperm count should NOT get married.

4. Children NEED a mother and a father to be normal

Having a father is a guarantee of NOTHING unless the father is a GOOD father. In fact, having a BAD father is worse than having none at all. Besides, who is to say there are no unique benefits a child with same sex parents enjoy that children with opposite sex parents do not? It works BOTH ways with the pros and cons. Perhaps it is a GOOD thing to have parents who out of necessity MUST plan and prepare to have children because it cannot happen by biological accident, like it does to many heterosexual couples, many of whom never wanted kids or are not ready to have them.

In fact, new research from the Netherlands which has had legal gay unions, adoption etc for over 10 year now, shows that children raised by lesbian couples are as well-adjusted as those raised in heterosexual-parent families. The analysis of 200 couples with boys and girls ages 4–8 -- half the parents were heterosexual, half lesbians recording the amount of time they spent child rearing, working around the house, and working outside their home showed that lesbian biological mothers were more satisfied with their partners as a coparent than heterosexual mothers were. It was also shown that lesbian mothers were more committed to the task of parenting than straight fathers.

There was more equal division of family tasks, with both of the lesbian partners spending more time on household work and child care, and less time at work outside the home, than the heterosexual fathers.

And last but not least,

5. Society will collapse if gays and lesbians are allowed to get married. It will lead to people marrying animals etc.

So far, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Spain, France, UK, Canada seem to be getting along pretty well. In fact, no one has been able to show me ANY conclusive evidence that my lesbian neighbors getting married will adversely damage MY family, faith, values, children etc.

So it is PURELY a religious arguement and NOTHING more. And no one religion should be forced to deny other people their AMERICAN right to family, self-acualization and freedom.

Here! Here!! Isn't it sad that with all the real problems in this world there are a group of people trying to legislate someone else's happiness!!! These people would better serve this world if they tried to feed, clothe and educate the poor and homeless in this country instead of telling someone that they can't marry the person they love.

If they stand before a judge in a court room and get married that is just fine, for them, but, standing in a House of God is a different matter all together...... the Church House can NOT have it both ways, you either go by Gods words or you don't... that simple...... the Laws of the land or NOT the laws of God......that simple...... go in peace.... God bless

Dude, we did not make the rules. We are though commanded to follow them. God, in His infinite wisdom and power has seen it fit to say that it is an abomination for a man to find love in another mans hairy anus. It is only a matter of common sense, when you consider it for what it is, that it is an abomination.
Let me give you an example from the wild. My dog, for instance, will occasionally eat his own excrement [and or] vomit. It is just unacceptable for a human being.
likewise, for a man to cover his member in another mans excrement, would logically be, unacceptable for a human being.
It should be simple common sense, but man in his horribly fallen state, apparently needs to be reminded.
they are Gods' rules. You are not really contending with Christians, but with your Creator, Himself.
(candid on purpose. I am sick of people beating around the bush about what it means to be a homosexual.)
I can only hope that God leads you to repentance.
