well, i was in the toilet of my 6th form campus when i overheard a couple of my schoolmates saying that they are pissed coz its half term yet their teachers gave them loads of work, then someone from their group suggested to pay someone to do it for her and that there are some internet sites that can do this too.

now, i've worked my @ss off this whole week and i've finished everything(thank goodness.) and it pissess me off remembering that conversation bcoz what if they really did cheat on their essays? IT IS SO UNFAIR to the likes of me who did our own essays! i would've reported them if i had an evidence to support my claim but since i have none, all i can do is rant or sumthing about it which suckss..

is there any way teachers could figure out if essays are authentically made by students or not??

Teachers usually know what their students are doing. If your essay is turned in as there is different vocabulary, sentence structure, or writing style you can pretty well expect to get caught. Now that is not saying that all teachers can tell when a student is cheating, because some of the teachers just aren't that much on the ball, but the majority of teachers suspect when a paper is handed in that is different from what the student is usually turning in.

Teachers have become very familiar with what is on the internet and the sites that promote cheating.

Since you did your own essay you are the smart one. You are the student that will get the most out of their education and be able to find success in the world. You are the next generation that will lead. Great job!

Cheaters will be the ones that fail more than succeed. They will be the next generation of followers, the ones who will blame the world for their problems and will never figure out how to solve them.

It is unfair in the beginning but in the end YOU are the winner.
Don't worry about the cheaters in the world because they always get caught, maybe not right away but trust me they will get caught. :-)

A teacher should be able to detect if the work appears similar to previous submissions by the student, if they suspect the worth is inauthentic they can use a basic internet search such as google to search a quote from the work, if the line pulls back a return they can tell if they pledgerized just the line or the entire essay.

However if the paper was written by a friend or associate with a similar writting style then there may be no way to detect if it's actually their work.

Yes! There is plenty of software and websites out there that teachers use to catch these lazy creeps. Almost all of my college essays have to be turned in to www.turnitin.com because my professors can tell who is plagarizing that way. Sometimes if teachers suspect a person is cheating because the person turned in a different writing style than he or she usually does, they can plug it into a specific software or website and it searches everything on the internet to check for plagarism.

Trust me; these people WILL get caught. Maybe not today, maybe not next semester even, but they will eventually get caught. Some colleges expell students for plagarizing, which I think is what should be done.

There's a database - maybe it's not used in 6th form, but most stuff from online? Yeah, they can find it if they're looking.

Just remember this - just because someone ELSE does the work for them? Doesn't mean they'll get good marks.

And also? Life isn't fair. I thought you'd have learned that by now.

(If you *really* want to be a Snitchy McSnitcherson you could always leave an anonymous note that the teacher should scrutinize their work closely but that's about all you can do.)

Yes. Teachers aren't dumb. They know when you are cheating and when you aren't.
By making you do homework all the time, they know your vocabulary, your writing styles, your weaknesses, ect.
When you turn in a paper that was made on the internet, they recognize that it isn't the type of work that you usually turn in.
They can take a fishy sounding sentence out of there, type it into a website made for teachers, and find the essay online.
Then they know you are cheating.
I agree, it isn't fair to the other students who really do their work, but, as long as you don't cheat, you really don't have anything to worry about.
They do though.

Teachers have figured out, with the help of some computer science majors, a way to compare the essay 'word for word' with all papers ever submitted!

Plagiarism is found in about 2 to 5 minutes, if it exists. They will be found out and expelled, it already has happened in many publicized cases since 2004! check ask.com or google!

My favorite cheating episode was when I caught a student plagiarizing a paper. I asked for an electronic copy of the document which the student emailed to me. I opened the paper in a HTML editor and found links in his paper. The links were hidden when viewed in Microsoft word.
When I followed the link it took me to a Spanish website where I found the entire paper in Spanish. I ran the paper through a trans later and called the student into my office. I handed the student 'his' research paper in English and then handed it to him in Spanish. The look on his face was priceless and he was out of the program.

No there is no way a teacher can find out if an essay is authentic unless it is plagorized! Who cares anyway, you know you did the right thing! Your are handing in work that you know you worked hard for, be proud of that! Don't worry about what other immature students do, only worry about yourself! You'll be much happier that way!

I guess it just goes to show you that the teacher is smarter then the student. Especially if the student has to cheat. It is not that hard to see. A student who says dis and dat, whuttup all year turns in a brilliant essay, it is too obvious.
