Jesus *did* say, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." He forgave them. I must consider, though, whether they repented. Have you ever forgiven someone in your heart, and yet they callously continued the same behavior? Although, you forgave them, they refused to *accept* the forgiveness because they saw nothing wrong with their behavior or attitudes. I have to wonder, even though Jesus forgave those who crucified him, whether they accepted his forgiveness by repentance.
The notation that you added, "please remember who crucified him," is interesting. Yes, all who have ever sinned, who needed a redeemer, crucified him. Mankind crucified him. Mankind needed a savior, a substitue sacrifice, to cover our sins. In that sense, we each crucified him. I cannot assign blame to any people group for the crucifixion of Jesus; I am not without fault, and so am unqualified to throw stones. All I can say is, thank God for his mercy and the gift of his Son!

Yes, they were so blinded by Satan ,also that was the law of the land, even though they lied on Christ.. They choose not to listen to the word of God. I know me personally who fears God forgives people who cause me heart ache and pain. So if I a sinner can for give people for what they've done Jesus Christ is way more important than me. Yes Jesus was able to forgive for he is apart of God, and God was and is still a forgiving God. We as parents have to learn to forgive people who hurt our children. Even though they crucified Jesus they were still his brothers in Christ. I pray that through all that , that they repented and ask Gods' forgiveness.

Father forgive them for they know not what they do. I guess that will be up to Jesus now won't it. Are you right with God?
Worry about yourself, are you forgiveable? Take the plank from your own eye, before you worry about the splinter in your brothers.

Did Jesus practice forgiveness?

Matthew 6:14-15
For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Matthew 23:33

You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?

Matthew 26:24

But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.

Critics allege that while Jesus taught that we should forgive others, he never actually forgave anyone who hurt him, but instead cursed his enemies.

Jesus forgave those who hurt him on numerous occasions. He explicitly forgave his crucifiers1 and implicitly forgave Peter for disowning him.
Furthermore, if Jesus is in fact divine, he was forgiving those who had wronged him every time he forgave someone's sins, for sin is itself a wrong against God. He even stated that any sin against him (the Son of Man) would be forgiven.

Jesus was not disobeying his own teaching when he rebuked the Pharisees and others who rejected him, but rather was following it: "If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him."
Had the Pharisees and others truly repented and asked for forgiveness, Jesus would have forgiven them gladly. Since they persisted in refusing to listen to him, he rebuked them. While this may seem like harsh treatment at first, it was ultimately an act of love. If they were rebuked, they might reconsider their actions and be saved from punishment; but if Jesus were tolerant of their position and said nothing, he would have been harming them by seeing that they continued to err. (Incidentally, rebuking as an act of love is a concept found in Proverbs, so Jesus was following not only what he taught, but God's teaching to the Jews as well.)

What about Judas Iscariot? Was forgiveness not available to him? I believe that had Judas truly repented and asked Jesus for forgiveness rather than committing suicide, Jesus would have forgiven him. Judas was sorry, but his sorrow didn't move him to turn back to God. Jesus knew in advance that Judas wouldn't repent and would consequently face judgment, just as he knew Judas would betray him in the first place. Thus Jesus' statement about Judas referred to a terrible fate resulting from his own choices, not an inevitable fate that he couldn't avoid even if he had truly repented.

Hey Pastor Carney,
I encountered this while looking into your question and found it interesting. Your quesiton definetly motivated me to read up on the subject. I thank you for your missionary work as it has reached me. God Bless You!

He said just before giving up the ghost "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do!"

He was in the business of forgiveness. Quite unlike us, today!

Yes He did forgive me. My sin is what put Him to death. Anybody who has sinned put Him on the cross so we could be set free from eternal suffering.

Yes, he forgave the Jews just as the Holy Father Pope Pius forgave them.
