I think the better question is, why is it so hard for YOU to find a "decent" job?
I suppose it depends on how you well you performed in the military. If you worked hard and obtained a high rank (Lieutenant or higher), then I would have a hard time believing that you couldn't find a "better" job (not that a security guard isn't a decent job). If you achieved at least a Sergeant rank, which is typically a "tough guy" position, then you shouldn't be surprised that you get "tough guy" jobs. There are plenty of people of both ranks who have obtained jobs that don't seem to match their backgrounds, and are quite satisfied with them.
However, if you simply "got by" in the military, then you will only "get by" in life. Since you recognize the difficulties in low-level jobs, you should realize that you need to improve yourself. Don't have a degree? Take high school or college-level classes. You'd be amazed how a certificate from a nursing school or technical college can get your foot in "better" doors! An Associates' (2-year) degree is even better, depending on what vocation you want, which seems to be the crux of your problem. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO OR BE?
Seek out the help of a vocational guidance counselor. Such services are usually free at your local unemployment office; even if you're employed, they can help find what you're suited for, and even offer training, and maybe even better jobs for you!
Good luck!

What did you do in the military? Did you take advantage of all they offer? My husband earned his BA degree in Criminal Justice in the Army. He also took advantage of other schooling (such as hazmat, and other courses that earned him certifications). His education, along with experience and training qualifies him for a good paying job when he eventually retires. (and no, he is not an officer)
If you simply got by in the military, didn't take advantage of the free college, didn't get yourself into schools-- then that is why. Or perhaps you simply aren't looking hard enough now. Or you're being too choosy. This is really a question you have to ask yourself. Beef up your resume with the experience you gained in the military and don't limit yourself.
As someone else suggested, you may want to use your GI Bill to further your education.

I get where you are coming from. The whole time in the military you are told once you get out just apply the knowledge and skills you were given and you will get a good job. Only to get out and find out that yeah, your experience is good and all but we want you go go to school for at least two more years and earn a degree telling us you're qualified to do the job you had already been doing for 4+ years in the military. It sucks, but you just gotta play the game if you want a decent job. At least the schooling will be mostly paid for

because you have to put some effort into it and not settle for a job as a security guard. if it's something you have to take to tide you over while you look so be it, but if you are not satisfied with it keep looking there all lots of jobs out there just look.

Because the republicans think that it is best for America to send all of the decent paying jobs to other countries so that upper management can give themselves raises, which leads to more campaign donations for the republicans.
