my husbands co. is deploying in december, we have known this for a whilte and my plan has been to pack up my things and put them in storage and give up the apartment while he is gone and go stay with family. within the past few months we learned that the co. will be moving from va to tx when they return from deployment and will not be comeing back here at all. so i thought that i could just have the army move our things then....now with only like a month and a half left to get things done i find out that the military will only move the things if they are the ones to pack it....so what do i do? my things will already be packed and in storage by the time they need to move them.....

Talk to the transportation office. They may have other options since this will be a change for the entire company. Some moving companies will take boxes you've packed yourself but they mark them as self packed and won't cover breakage in them so it's a gamble.

The military will put your stuff in storage at the destination for a certain amount of time.. and after that I think you can pay a minimal fee to keep your items in storage. Its definitely worth calling transportation to find out more about it because it could save you from having to pay storage for the entire deployment. I know when we PCSed from San Diego to Seattle, my stuff was in storage for a few months before I found an apartment.

Instead of basing you decisions on the hearsay of the other Army wives, why not call the household good office and ask?

While I was in the Navy they moved all kinds of things I pre-packed. Additionally, while the Army (or in my case the Navy) pays for the move, they do not do the move. The move is contracted out to moving companies.

You should also have the option of a do it yourself (DIY) move. You pack everything, put it in a truck and drive to the new base. You get paid for mileage etc of the move.

Personally, I would wait. You never ever make plans based on what the Army tells you. Hurry up and wait, remember? My husbands unit was supposed to deploy in June, then July, then September, then early October. He just left last week. That is all to say that you NEVER know what is going to happen. So if he is going to PCS anyway, then wait on the orders and let the Army pay for the move. If it is going to happen anyway, then why bother doing it yourself?

do a ditty move. you actually make out better this way because they pay you 95% of what they would pay a contractor to move your stuff and you can get 60% of that money up front. so you will profit from this. If you dont feel like moving yourself go to jypso and see what your other options are. they may even pay for your storage while you wait to move.

two choices: stay put, or do a DITY move when the time comes.
