Do you ever get the feeling that all religion (yes, even Christianity) is just a futile attempt to reach out and understand a power which we, as humans, have not the ability to perceive?

The first thing you must do is define religion... Now and days, religion to me is defined more so by tradition, than the actual purpose of it so in the sense yes. Religion/Tradition is trying grasp an undestanding of something we have no idea about.

It isn't a futile attempt. That "reaching out" as you call it, is how one discovers there is indeed a God. People created religion, but God is, was, and always will be.

Christianity is NOT about us reaching out to understand
God (like all other religions)

It's about God reaching down to us!
