An active speaker has the amp built into it. Many active speakers actually have two amps; one for the low end and one for the high frequencies. A passive speaker requires a power amp or receiver to operate. I would steer clear of pro audio gear for a home theater. The best you can do with a thousand dollars is the best sounding system to your ears that you can afford-it all comes down to personal taste.

You should avoid any speakers or equipment that contain the words "Pro", "Professional", "Competition", "Turbo", "Laser", etc. These are just marketing words slapped onto low-quality systems to fool newbies.

"Professional" speakers might mean portable DJ speakers to fill dance halls. These are not good for home use.

"Reference" speakers are also not what you would expect.

If you just want 'loud' look into Klipsch. These speakers are famous for making good sound without needing tons of power.

If you want detail/accuracy - look into ribbon or electrostatic panel speakers. These are what my audiophile friends use because they have huge radiating surfaces. But they need an external subwoofer and a fairly heafty amp. But the basic Magnepan MMG speakers are $550 each. (Hit Craigslist or eBay for used).

If you want a Home Theater system - the thing that impresses people is the subwoofer. Check out SVS and HSU Research as producing great subwoofers for modest prices. A set of budget, but identical Monitor-style speakers and a good sub can give a great HT experience.

If you really, really want to 'win', consider building your own speakers and subwoofers. The cost is about one-third of retail speakers. There are a number of speaker building sites to help and places like PartsExpress.com sell the parts and kits. (My problem - I am no good with the woodworking so I would have to buy the enclosures.)

umm..passive speaker can mean anything lol.do you mean a passive radiating speaker as a part of a speaker system? if so,it's used as a cost effective way to add bass to (any speaker system)..basically it's an additional cone but with no power,it uses the frequencies from the power sub and uses that air to move it's own- being in the same enclosure as the powered one.

Active means it has an amp built in the box. Passive needs an external amplifier. They can both sound good.
