what is the difference between 2, 3, 4 and 6 channel R/C helicopters?

im interested in buying a remote controlled toy, can someone tell me the difference in channels? i dont understand.

The more channels you have the more control options you have on the helicopter.

2-ch are for beginners: Go up/down and move around
