Doesn't sound cruel to me. I"d name my dog a name that I like, is short and quick to say and that fits the dog's personality. I like Nigel. You won't have a problem with other dogs thinking you are calling them LOL. Nigel will not be going to folks calling his name because almost no other dog will have that name.

Think how you would feel shouting it in the park etc. Try saying it outloud. What do you think. My friend got a dog from rescue and he didn't want to confuse her by changing her name. He's had her 3 years now and still hates to call her when she runs into the bushes...she's called Marion!

Is your dog male or female? Does it play a lot with other dogs? Is it tough enough to defend itself? Are you concerned about the dog attacking you in your sleep?
But then it is your dog, call it whatever you like, who cares if the other dogs make fun of it.

I used to have a cat named "Bob" becaues my dad said the only way we could get a cat was if we let him name it bob so he could call it Bob-Cat! LOL He didn't think we where accually going to let him name it bob and boy was he suprised when we came home with a rescue kitten! lol
