You will know when you have one. There will be no doubt in your mind. lol. I would suggest experimenting with your self.
The best explanation I ever heard was it is like a release of a sneeze lol.
If you aren't achieving it I would bet someone is missing the point. There is a good book out for women. "Our bodies ourselves".

You will know. There's no mistaking it. And there's a build up before it that sort of lets you know it's coming --- it sort of feels like a pressure in your belly or lower, and if you keep doing ...*ahem*....whatever it is you're doing, it will suddenly be released and it gives you this really powerful, butterfly feeling. It's kind of like scratching an itch ...the longer you go without, the more intense the need to "scratch" becomes, and then finally "itching" it is even more satisfying.

Well, you kind of lose control of your body. You breathe short breaths, possibly your toes point and your either dig your nails into him or flail your arms. Oh yeah, and usually you scream. It is a loss of control.
Yes, they are nice, but I don't think it is the end all, be all. Kind of like a roller coaster ride, where part of you loves it, and the part of you that wants control is pissed off.
Don't judge your sex life solely on that. Most women cannot come just through intercourse alone. We usually need manual stimulation. And of course, mental stimulation in the relationship!
