Can you find some photos of the two of you together? I would make him a "memory book"...insert some photos and write down some of your favorite memories that you have of him or some qualitites you admire, etc...
I think this will mean much more to him and he can enjoy it for time to come

So think of something nice that he doesn't need.
Don't be predictable and don't assume that just because he's old that he wants socks, or anything else to keep him warm.
If he likes stream engines next year is the anniversary of the Mallard's high speed run from London to Edinburgh, buy him a ticket, if 500 quid is a bit much take him to York to see the engine. If cars are his thing buy him a few laps of a race circuit in a classic car, hire an e-type for a day and drive him wherever he wants to go.
Give him something interesting I bet it'll mean more to him than slippers!

I don't know where you're from but if you live in the UK, Argos do a great gift box of old newspapers with the biggest headlines over the last century. Your Grandad might enjoy reading and remembering the past events and be able to read them as if it was just happening today all over again.. I think they cost about £10

Maybe cook him a home made dinner.
Look and see what style of clothes he wears and his size then get him a nice shirt or robe for him.
You can also get him a nice mug to drink from. Maybe make him up a nice hpoto album for him with special memories in it of the family past and present family members, as well as special little messages and notes added him for him. It can make him feel special to know that you did something special like that for him.
Just follow your heart, and reflect back on what kind or connection or relationship you have with him. You'll know then what to do.
you can always check these links below for other ideas.

Cruise tickets. If I was 82 I'd want to see the world before I move on.

If you spend a lot of time with your grandpa this would be a little easier. If not, try to. Grandpa always have many stories to tell. Sometimes about their childhood, sometimes about their battles in war, etc. Eventually, you will notice them mentioning what they really want.
When you get the chance, asked them.. "Gramps, if I have a time machine, where in time do you want to go and why?"
I hope my advice helps! :)

A good book, a jigsaw, a collection of crosswords, or anything that will keep his brain working but isn't too taxing on the body.

What I did for mine was really cool. I took photographs of the family over the years and made a collage with them all and mounted it. It was something he loved and it cost me next to nothing.
