I own a 97 GMC Jimmy 4.3L. I pulled in the driveway and it was running rough. I shut it off and now it doesn't start. It cranks but appears to be a fuel issue. I don't hear the fuel pump kicking on when I turn the key, which I have in the past. Fuel pump? Relay? Something easy?

Under the hood. By the battery, in a black box.

Fuses are a good place to start the diagnostics. If you don't find any bad fuses, swap the relay with something that fits the same plug. If that solves the problem then it's just the relay.

I bet it isn't. IF it is the fuel pump, check for power at the pump connection to be sure you haven't got a loose connection somewhere. If you trace power all the way back to the pump, then try turning the key on, then press the fuel relief port on the fuel rail (better get a Childress manual, unless you know where the fuel rail and relief ports are). If you have good pressure (you will blow a little gas out - wear safety goggles and don't strike a match) fuel will spurt out. Don't spend hours doing that, you don't need to soak yourself and the engine compartment with raw fuel.

If ALL ELSE seems to be good then follow this simple rule:
1) Fuel
2) Ignition
3) Timing.

It's gotta be one of those three. Since you have timing chain and gears, I'd bet it's not the timing. It could be ignition - since it was running, but running rough.

My best bet is that it is clogged fuel injectors. My neighbor had a similar problem. He replaced the coils, starter AND fuel pump, but it still wouldn't start. I checked fuel, ignition and timing, all was where it should have been. The problem was clogged injectors on his EFI Carburator. The fix was simple - use some carburator cleaner, but you have to get it inside the fuel system. You really need to know what you are doing before you mess with stuff if you aren't certain.

If you have any other questions - feel free to e-mail me. I'll do what I can to help.

RE:
where is the fuel pump relay on a gmc jimmy?

The fuel pump relay is in the under hood fuse/relay center and it should be marked on the legend on the underside of the center's cover. Normally the electrical portion of this stuff is good and the fuel pump or the sender assembly is bad. Check to be sure as this is expensive to replace.

A lot of the time you will find them under the hood in the black box usually near the drivers fender. If you find that pull the top off and there should be a diagram of what is located where. Not sure yours is but it's a place to start.
