I am an atheist, but here are my thoughts on this:
When it comes to worshiping God, I suppose it would serve to constantly keep him on your mind and to remember that he was the one that gave you those commandments so it would be harder to fall away from them.
Also, being thankful for him and what he has done might make some appreciate life more and not take it for granted. Also, worshiping the same God and practicing rituals on a regular basis brings people closer together and creates a sense of unity.

No, that's not selfish. If God allowed all evil people (for that is what you essentially are if you are diametrically opposed to God, who is everything that is good) into Heaven, then it would cease to be Heaven; it would be just like here, or Hell at worst. A person who hates God would be miserable in Heaven.
Yes, God did give us free will so we can make choices, but there's no such thing as a "consequence-free choice". You can choose to do evil, but it has consequences. Just like raising a child.
If God doesn't want "robots", but He only wants people who love Him in Heaven, the only logical thing to do would be to give people a choice, then only take the ones who consciously choose to love Him with Him. The rest are not "tortured forever", as popular theology believes (but not the Bible), but are destroyed instantly and permanently. They are put down like a bad dog. To believe that sinners go on living in torture forever is to believe that sin is stronger than God! No, God is quite capable of destroying sin and sinners forever, and He will. Thank God for that. That is the only way to have peace in the universe.

I would explain this to you however it would take the better part of a day and a lot more room than alloted. Let's leave it at this if you truly understood the bible then you would know that he did not create us just to worship him. He created us to be just like him but we have forgotten how. Are we supposed to give him the glory? Of course because our gifts come from Him but He only gives us the strength to do these things. People who wait for God to change their lives will be waiting till they die. We do things but He gives us the power to do these things. Worship is only one half of it.

Is he selfish? Or are we as individuals selfish because we so desire his attention, that we selfishly request his help and blessings for ourselves, and do things we think he would dislike just to get a response, any response. When we don't feel he is pampering us, do we get selfish and sulk? I think so.

He is pretty lame. I find it hard to argue with that point of view. I really do.
